Could somebody measure their 10/22 for me please?

My 5-year-olds (twin girls) are almost ready to graduate from Red Ryder BB-guns at 30' to Ruger 10/22's at 25 yards. I hope to pick up one or two this weekend at the gunshow if I can find the right deal.

I had to cut the stocks down on the BB-guns to fit their short arms. I know I'll have to do the same thing with the Ruger.

Could somebody who owns a stock Ruger 10/22 make sure I have plenty of room to cut the Ruger down and still have the magic 26"? I just measured my M1 Carbine, which I believe is comparable in length, and it looks like I'll be pushin the envelope.

Lord knows, if I cut it down to 25", it may tempt my girls to go on a shooting rampage at school or somethin...

Thanks

From the Ruger website.

Here you go Yanky. http://www.ruger-firearms.com/rfrimfire_auto.html . It says with a 18 1/2" barrel the overall length is 37 1/4". I don't know what the length of pull is because my guns are at my parents house in the safe. I hope this helps a little. I say get it and cut down the stock if nothing else. There are so many replacement stocks on the market for cheap it won't be a problem when they get older.

Just measured mine - 18.5 " barrel, synthetic stocks. LOP is 13 1/4. Length overall is as advertised on Ruger's website.

Just measured mine....wooden stocks.
Stock weapon...38.5 overall, 18.5 bbl, 13.5 length of pull.
Short stock. 35.5 overall, 18.5 bbl, 10.5 length of pull.

Have spare cut stock....three inches short, no but plate, straight cut.

If you cut yours....use thinnest saw blade that you can cut straight with and save the piece. Kids grow.

My compliments Yankeetrash, workin with younguns two at a time. Good show Sir.

Just checked a Daisy 880, LOP 13 3/4, longer than stock 10-22.

Ol fart wontshutup.

Since the Rugers have pistol grip stock......think about adding a filler to the front of the pistol grip so that little hands can grip the stock and still reach the trigger. On stock stock the distance from front middle of p grip to trigger is about 2.5"....pretty long reach.

Yanky,
Sitting here w/ mine on my lap and a tapemeasure.

At 26" you'd be cutting it off about 2" behind the receiver w/ the stock 18.5" barrel !!!

My 10/22 Carbine measures 37" overall and say 13+" length of pull.

Agree w/ CRSam - my measurement is about 3" from middle of Pistol Grip to Trigger. Might need to build that up in front and furhter compensate w/ more that you take off the stock.

You are in construction so I won't elaborate on measures to take when cutting off the stock beyond a fine tooth blade w/ tape on the wood, etc.

Hey, why not just restock it w/ a synthetic true pistol grip and get some 20 rd mags. Then you'll have a couple truly EVIL additions to add to your collection ;)

Seriously, I commend you for introducing your daughters to shooting. Both of my kids grew up w/ guns and shooting and have an educated first hand appreciation to counter the typical media/general population opinions.

Good Luck Sir!!!

Ooooppps,
I don't think about stupid ATF things!!!

Does cutting down the stock to far turn it into a 'pistol' or some other crazy ATF Bada$$ classification???

Anyway, rear of receiver to buttplate is about 13.5" on a 'horizontal' plane. LOP is about 13.25".

Hope this helps.

Aside from minimum barrel length restrictions, there is also a minimum overall length, including butstock. 26" for shotguns and I think the same for rifles.

AyeAye.....good point re the tape, forgot. I use it, just didn't think bout it.

Thanks guys. Looks like I'll be 'safe'.

Without having one here, my guess is I'll end up with about 30" OAL of non-evilness. Right now, their trigger pull will be about 6-8". I like to make sure they have the correct length of buttstock to develop a good cheek weld.

Oh, and good heads-up on the pistol grip distance - I hadn't thought of that. Looks like I'll have to spend an extra hour or two in the shop planing down a pistol grip extension made out of a chunk of 2x4 to screw onto the front of the stock grip.

Ah yes - once they begin to grow a little more and are ready for full-length equipment, they'll be ready for the introduction to "evilness'. They can each have a black folder for their 10/22's so their guns can look "just like daddy's" SP1 w/ telescoping stock.:D

Yankytrash.....was discussin yor project this mornin and buddy hit me with pretty neat suggestion....or so I thought.

Stead of autoloader which is a pain to operate single shot.....why not get a pair of sumpin like the youth model single shot bolt action Henrys ? Easier to use as a trainer.....less butcherin to do on the stock.....and fair to middlen guns.

Just a thought that werent mine, cause i hadnt thunk it.

Sam

Well, call me selfish, but daddy would love to see a pair of Ruger 10/22 folders with 25-rd Ramlines in his girls' hands.:D

If I took a picture of both girls with their fully-tricked-out 10/22's, I could make up T-shirts with a caption under the picture that says, "No means NO!" ;)

YankyTrash-Any 10/22's

Yanky,
Just curious, Did you find any 10/22's at the gun show?
I love what you are doing intro'ng your daughters to shooting!!!
Let us Know!!!

This thread is funny. My daughter is 19 months old and I bought her a used .22 Savage youth model single shot bolt gun, $100 out the door. Three weeks ago I bought her a Ruger 22/45 with a four inch tube. My wife things I am jumping the gun a bit. I will wait awhile longer before I introduce her to dad's favorite hobby.

Yanky,
I live your teeshirt idea.
