Cosmo Dragoon replica

This is a odd idea, but.......

I know most people have never heard of it, but back in the 90's I used to watch this cartoon/anime called Captain Harlock. In it a character carried a laser pistol that was made to look like a cap and ball revolver called a Cosmo Dragoon. It is my favourite movie/TV gun of all time. I even have a 3/4 scale model of one.

I'm in the process of making a low-budget film, and I thought how neat it would be to have a "modern" cap and ball revolver that somewhat resembled the Cosmo Dragoon for the movie. So far I've came up with this (my photoshop skills suck);

Using a cheap, used Pietta '51 Navy, with a muzzlebrake like this one,

For the top strap on the model, I thought a sight rib like this should be a good substitute,

Then give the barrel and frame a coat of dark grey DuraCoat, and make the medallion for the grips.

Two things I'm unsure how to replicate are the oval "shields" in front of the cylinder, and the large cocking device at the rear of the gun. Any ideas?

The two stipulations is that it has to be easy fabricated (no custom CNC machining, eta), and has to fire, even if its just a blank powder charge using blue firework powder.

please don't do that to an 1851 Navy....

Use a Remington instead....

Those things (Remmies) are just plain fugly to begin with.

LOL!

;)

I have heard of Captain Harlock and have some videos and perfect manuals from that period - although, I would have to dig in the vault to see. The geek force was strong in me at one time.

Sounds like a fun project.

The flash hider looks OK but instead of the Bomar-type sight rib, consider a weaver-type rib that would extend back over the cylinder. Then you could mount a cheap Chinese red dot or optic. If the thingy sticking out the back is for cocking the hammer, you won't be able to operate it one handed. You could modify the spur, maybe cut off 2/3 of it and add something that looked cool but would still permit thumb cocking. The rounded shields in front of the cylinder could be fashioned from plastic easter eggs but if you plan on using blank loads they'd have to be removable so you could reload and they'd have to be farther away from the cylinder or the barrel/cylinder flash would blow them off. Instead of blank loads, why not use CGI gun flashes?

That's a genius idea with the easter eggs. Maybe I can find something similar made of metal, and run a small bolt through the two halves. That's also a great idea with modifying the hammer spur, but I'm still unsure what I could use to make the large cooking.. thingy, lol. I might fab something up with styrene plastic, but unsure how that would hold up.

I considered a weaver rail and red dot. But it seems too common for armourers to just slap a random optic on a gun and consider it "futuristic". I also want to stay away from CG muzzle flashes if possible to keep as much "realism" as I can.

Thanks alot for the ideas!
