Corroded Barrel? HELP!

I just bought a Ruger Mini 30 at a show. It appears in good shape. It was the usual filthy. Upon cleaning I noticed the bore had an almost "orange skin" look. Not too deep. The rifiling still looks good. After a whole bunch of shooters choice, I took her to the range. Hole in hole at 25 yards with "Bear" Russian fodder. 1 inch at 50. That was rested open sights. The gun functioned perfectly with the factory five round magazine.

What's the deal? Was she shot with corrosive ammo and not cleaned? Is this a problem? Is ther a danger or any thing? Help please from anyone who has seen or heard about this.

Pikie. Calm down, take a deep breath, and exhale. Sounds to me like you have come copper fouling, and not corrosion.

Damage from corosive primers will look rough abd blackened. I have three rifle right now that have that problem, a very old 30-30, a 1912 Steyr mauser and a 1917 Enfield. I inheritd the 30-30, bought the 1912 for the action to build a sporter, and the enfield was already sporterized, but I want the action to build up a magnum rifle.

I'd recommend something like Sweet's 7.62 bore cleaner to get rid of it, but I don't know how it might affect the bleed hole for the gas operation. You might want to contact Ruger with that question, or see if there is a bore cleaner they'd prefer you use.

If you should shoot some corrosive primed ammo, good ols hot soapy water is what you clean with.

An excellent CLP to use is FP-10. It will remove the rust and fouling in your bore without harming the barrel. FP-10 is GOOD for guns :D .

Another good product to remove and prevent rust is Corrosion-X.

Hope this helps,

THANKS !!

Paul, Clay, - THANK YOU. I'm a bit embarassed. That didn't look like the fouling I'm used too. It's almost silvery. A few patches of Sweets came out bluer than my can of Maxwell House coffee can! I dried it out and oiled the daylights out of it. I don't think that amonia will hurt the gas port, but I'll call Ruger tomorrow. I was upset that someone would let something as nice as this Ruger get into that bad a shape - but I came back to reality when I gave my 42 year old body a glance and realized I needed more then Sweet's!!! - Pikie:)

Mini 30

1" group at 50 yards is really good for a Ruger Mini 14/30. I've had 3 of them. I'd hang onto that one. Maybe you shouldn't clean the barrel. :p
