Corbon Ammo?

I was wondering if any of you have tried the 140gr. JHP 357Mag loads from Corbon? If so what was the flash and recoil like? I've mainly been using 158gr. JHP but would like to try either the Corbon 140gr. or Win. 145gr. ST. The Corbon looks promising as it uses a good expanding bullet but with some weight behind it. It also goes about 1300fps so it should expand pretty good. Does anyboy know any expansion and penetration specs on either of these loads. Thanks

I checked out a lot of corbon stuff a few years ago for an American Handgunner annual. At that time the 140 grain load did 1225, 1355, 1388 from a 2.25" sp101, a 4 inch gp100 and a six inch gp100.

Velocities in the same order with the 125 grain load were 1357, 1514 and 1526.

I shot the bullets thorough various things including ribs, brisket and wet pack and saw that the recovered 140s were larger than the 125s- doubtless because there is more lead there to expand. In general, I find the recoil and blast from 125-158 loads to be very similar and they often calculate out the same on ballistic programs.

Do you remember what the flash was like with the 140gr. stuff. I'm not very familiar with Corbon SD ammo so I'm not sure what to expect. What was penetration like?

Before you rely on Corbon ammo for self defense, test a few rounds in your revolver, After you have loaded a full cylinder fire 4 of them and then open and check the two unfired rounds. They may have jumped the crimp and could tie up your revolver and render it useless in a SD situation.

I had Corbon 110 gr .38 spl +p ammo they make do that in my S&W 642 the bullets came halfway out of the case. When I called them they said it was normal:confused: for their ammo.

Funny speer ammo doesnt do that, and federal ammo doesnt either.

In Fact I hand loaded full power ammo with both lead and jacketed bullets at max +p levels and never had one of my handloads do that either in my 642.

When I tested the 110gr +p corbons against the 110 federal NON +p by firing it into wet newspaper, the federal standard pressure penetrated just as far as the Corbon +p and the federal bullets expanded better.

I now carry the speer 135 gold dot +p .38, it does not jump the crimp and it penetrates better than the federal 110.

JMHO YMMV
