Cor-Bon .45 Colt 200grn JHP for home defense

The only revolver I currently own is a Ruger Super Redhawk .454 Casull. It would obviously be ridiculous (and reckless) to use a .454 cartridge for self defense purposes. I have been considering obtaining .45 Colt ammunition for home defense, possibly Cor-Bon 200grn JHP, which is reputed to be a tremendous man stopper. Would this ammo be too powerful as well? I plan to purchase another revolver for self-defense at some point, but for the time being this is the only one I have. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The CORBON45Colt 200gr JHP is a real 45 caliber

whomper.
It is specifically designed for personal defense with 45 Colt revolvers. It will do the job...and has.
The bullet itself is the same one they load in 45 ACP at 1050fps.

Yup, it's exactly what the doc ordered for self defense in your beastie. VERY effective self defense.

There are several similar rounds out there, made to operate at around 18,000 - 20,000psi. That way, you can use 'em in something like an Italian SAA safely...in your 454 they'll all be pussycats as far as recoil is concerned. That Cor-Bon load is one, another is the Winchester Silvertip .45LC, and Pro-Load has something in the same class. I have no solid clue which is better, the Pro-Load or Cor-Bon at present. Cor-bon should start loading the 165grain or 200grain Pow'R'Ball projectiles in the .45LC cases sometime soon, at which point that'll probably be the ultimate king of the hill defense load in your gun. The Pow'R'Ball is "a generation past the usual JHP" in that it can't clog on clothes - right now they've reserved 'em for their semi-auto calibers first but they promise to completely replace JHPs with 'em in as much of their defense-grade product as possible...and since .45ACP and .45LC take the same bore, .45LC should be the first of the Cor-Bon wheelgun calibers to get the Pow'R'Ball.

Until then, the Gold Dot projectile as used by Pro-Load might have a slight edge over Cor-Bon. Note the words "might" and "slight".

Cor Bon-
45 COLT Self Defense 200gr JHP 1100 fps / 537 ft/lbs
Cost is 15.18 for 20 rounds.

CCI Blazer-
200 GR JHP 1000/fps 444ft/LBS
Cost is about $21.00 for 50 rounds.

Do the math here. The CCI Blazer is 95% of what the Cor-Bon round is at less than half the cost.

165 gr .45LC sounds good in the veocity department until you consider the sectional density(what gives you penetration) is only .115.
OTOH, the sectional density of a 200 gr .45LC matches that of a 125 gr .357 Mag. at .140.
Sectional density isn't the end all be all, but it's a factor that has to be considered when dealing with big bores and realativly light weight projectiles.

Cor-Bon defensive ammo works for me for couple of reasons.

Performance is quite good.

Flash color and intensity does little damage to vision in low light situations. Have done Hogan's Alley drills in low light and no problem with aiming subsequent shots.

454 ammo for defense is no more rediculous than using a SRH for defense.

You obviously didn't buy the Ruger for defense, so if you are that concerned about ammo performance in that application you are making much ado about nothing.

A good hunting round for thin-skinned game makes a pretty effective people stopper. Speer's 225gr Jacketed soft hollowpoint over maybe 12-14gr Unique should be in the ballpark. Designed for 45LC velocities, it will show massive expansion at higher speeds. Just don't go too fast, it will shed its jacket.

I'm with RAE and Sam.

Spend most of my range time and plinking with the Mountain Gun using the 200g Blazers...very easy to shoot well and quickly; and point of aim is nearly identical to the 200g Cor-Bon load. In your RSH, it should be like shooting a K-frame .38Special.

Now, if you can get two or three bad guys lined up in a row, use the FNSJHP 300g Cor-Bon load. What a thumper!

Seems like it'd work just fine.

I keep CCI/Blazer .45 Colt 200gr Gold Dots in my home defense... Winchester 94 Trapper. ;)

Another good choice, that looks mediocre on paper, but has been proven to work well in real life,is the WW 225 grain SilverTip.
