Sharpshooting Sheriff Thwarts Suicide Attempt; Suspect Attempting 'Suicide By Cop'

The Associated Press

PAWNEE, Okla. (AP) - Like a scene from a western movie, a quick-thinking Oklahoma sheriff shot a pistol out of the hand of a burglary suspect who was attempting to take his own life.

"He was hearing voices in his head," Pawnee County Sheriff Roger Price said Monday. "He was trying to get us to shoot him...suicide by cop.

"I pitched him a cell phone to call his girlfriend. While he was dialing, I shot the gun out of his hand," Price said.

The man was identified as David E. Coon Jr., 32, of Hominy, a suspect in Friday's tool theft from an oil-rig site southwest of Hominy in Osage County.

Coon received first aid at the scene and at Pawnee Municipal Hospital before he was taken by ambulance to a Tulsa Regional Medical Center.

But Coon walked away from the Tulsa hospital before Osage County deputies could arrest him. He was last seen in a hospital gown, officials said.

The Osage County Sheriff's Office alerted Cleveland police and the Pawnee County officials on Friday that Coon was driving toward Cleveland. Authorities pursued Coon, who stopped on a rural road south of Maramec, officials said.

Coon refused to leave his car and instead held a gun to his head, authorities said.

Price said he received a call that Coon was trying to flee again. Price went to the scene and shot out the tires on Coon's car. Then began almost two hours of talking with Coon to get him to put down the gun and leave the car, Price said.

Coon "didn't want to go back to prison," Price said. "He said: `I'd rather die...You'll have to kill me.'

"He said little voices were telling him to kill himself or me," Price said. "I told him to tell that voice not to do that."

As dusk approached, Price persuaded Coon to call his girlfriend and tossed him the phone. Price said deputies later recovered a loaded shotgun as well as the pistol from Coon's car.

Just like on the old Saturday Noon Westerns! :D
Just what the public expects! Now remember, if you ever have to use deadly force, this is what is expected of you too.
