Sounds like another Suicide-by-Cop story. *sigh*

Cops shoot dead Colorado man wielding fake gun

The Associated Press

LYONS, Colo. (August 29, 2000 5:50 p.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) - Sheriff's deputies fatally shot a man who aimed a pistol-shaped cigarette lighter at them and threatened to shoot, authorities said.

Dispatchers received an anonymous 911 call early Tuesday claiming an officer was down, said Sheriff's Deputy Steve Treacle. Two deputies checked the area, and all sheriff's deputies were found to be safe.

Shortly after the call, at 5:23 a.m., dispatchers received a report of a man with a gun on the porch of a home on the same street as where an officer had been reported injured.

As two deputies approached the house, a man on the porch started walking toward them. When the deputies saw what they believed to be a handgun, they repeatedly ordered him to stop and drop his weapon, Treacle said.

The man, Eric Vantslot, 30, then raised the object, pointed it at one of the deputies and said they would have to shoot him or he would shoot them. The deputies fired, injuring Vantslot, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Investigators later learned the object he claimed was a weapon was a cigarette lighter that resembled a semiautomatic handgun.

Yes it does read as "they shot a dead man, with a fake gun"

How low can these CO cops get; shooting a dead man like that. Have they no respect.

Wonder how that editor got his degree; Cracker Jack Box?

"Police grant man's dying wish" or
"Man's wish on magic cigarette lighter comes true!"
All kidding aside, I feel bad for the LEOs when they realized he wasn't really armed.

It sounds like a "Blue Suicide" and they are becoming more common. It happened here last summer. A guy walks into a convience store with a 12 guage and just sits in a booth. Tells the clerk to call the cops. Cop no.1 shows up and BG shoots over his head. Cop retreats and call for backup. Cop no.2 shows up and tell hims to drop his weapon. BG shoots at cop 2 and runs and hides under cop1's car. Cop 2 shootstires out of car , dropping car on BG, who is now stuck telling the cops to shoot him. BG keeps pointing shotgun at cop. Cop 2 obliges and ends it. It was called a blue suicide. Sounds like the guy with the lighter had the same idea. Lets face it, pointing anything that looks like a gun at 2 cops is not a high percentage move. Ecspecially a lighter. The cops probably about filled their boots when they saw flame erupt. I cant say that I blame them . It'll probably be ruled a good shoot.

All jokes aside

weather it was a good shoot or not and I'm guessing that even in CO. it will be a good shoot. These two guys have to go thru an I.A investigation that will reveal the toe jam in their socks, have it reviewed by a ada who may or may not want to make a name for themselves. And then they have to live with the nightmares and the fact that they got to kill someone not because he was a true criminal but because he did'nt have the cojenes to do it himself.

It's a bad deal all the way around but the moron does'nt have to live with his actions,,just the cops.

Best to all "on the job" out there. Poacher.
