Cops not allowed to have guns in school....Question?

I know that its forbidden to have guns in any educational establishment, and this in fact even applies to LEO's, UNLESS they're on duty, and they're in that establishment as a direct result of their duties (IE...they got a call about a school shooting, or something along those lines)

I was just wondering if this has always been the law, or if it was enacted as a direct result of Columbine or the other school shootings, because when I was in I think 2nd or 3rd grade, a cop came in to talk to our class, and he had his gun with him, and he showed it to us. He wasnt on duty, and he wasnt there because he got a call that required his presence....and then theres that DEA shooting...Im kind of confused

Guns and Schools

The federal guns-free schools act specifically exempted two groups of people from the restriction - LE and "... those legally allowed to carry the weapon...". The individual states have chosen to enact various "enhancements" - some more restrictive, some less. Most have gone way over the top in restrictions...

Not universally true. CFP holders in Utah may carry in schools.

Hmm..I thought it was pretty much a law in every state that you cant carry a gun in schools, under no circumstances, but I guess its just North Carolina

Thanks anyway. Thats answers my question for the most part

If you're interested enough in the subject, might I suggest www.packing.org for laws of each state (can often be entertaining). In Utah we can also carry in bars and restaurants serving alcohol, state and local offices (including the Capitol and Legislature), public meetings, sporting and cultural events, etc. Private property owners can, of course, prohibit carry on their premises. Churches may choose to prohibit carry, also.

Guns can be carried, concealed only, by CHL holders here in Oregon. But, of course the anti-gunners in Salem are trying to change that :barf: .

In over 15 years that Oregon has allowed this, with 0% incident during that time, appartently it's *going* to *create* a problem  if the law continues.

Feel good bliss nanny laws.

As for LEO's, as long as they are on duty (and in some states that restrict, will allow off-duty LEO's to carry into schools) then they are allowed. IIRC, the same goes for on-duty military personal in the course of their duty (if they are called out or are on duty in the school under orders).

Personally, I think that we went in the wrong direction, that we should have laws that allow as many people as possible to carry onto school grounds. Like Israel.

That way with little punks like those two in Columbine come walking through the door and pull their guns, all of a sudden Mr. Smith the PE teacher, Ms. Jones the math teacher, and Mrs. Green the Principle all have their guns out and blasting holes before they even get past the front desk.

Not having to wait four hours for SWAT.

TN is the same as the OP IIRC. Officers on duty at the school or in the course of their duties on school grounds may carry. All others are restricted. I'll check to make sure, and post the TCA if I can find it quickly.

PA carry in school laws

In Pennsylvania, you can not carry in K-12 unless it is for "legitimate purposes" - which are not defined.

My ccw application said I can carry anywhere but courtrooms and federal buildings - if I remember correctly.

Colleges are not mentioned at all.

LEO's in Georgia can absolutely carry into schools. There are very few places on or off duty LEOs cannot carry..and almost all those places have a locker (i.e. court, prisons, jail, etc).
