Convince me of what upper to get for my AR

Mainly, I'm talking about make, but I've also be trying to decide on type of upper. I want to stick with 16", and go as light as possible. Unless being TOO light is a detriment, of course! I had thoughts of going with Bushmasters new postban M4 upper, but wasn't sure how the barrel heating up would affect the different diameters along the barrel length.

I also realize that Bushy is at best $150 more than a FN upper with Wilson barrel. But then, the Bushy quality (number of FTF) may be better.

Another thought is that people say that chrome lined barrels aren't as accurate as other barrels. SS barrels are supposed to be better on accuracy, but won't hold up as long.

I just want to get the best for what I'll be spending my money on.

Thanks for your advise!

Wilson who?

Pickett?
Carney?
Brian?
;)

cheap can be a cause regrets later
i would go with a Bushmaster upper

the colt lightweight contour is one of the lightest

what is your application for this barrel?
HD, squirel hunting & range shooting all have different hardware requirements.

It will be like an 'urban warefare' setup. But mostly will use it at the range. :)

Along with this, if I DO eventually get an upper that is dedicated to 'long distance', I'll not want to go Bushmaster. Right? I'll want to go SS or something. Correct?

Here's what I'd love to have. Something with excellent quality, fairly light, yet with capabilities of longer range shooting (say, 400 yrds, and around 4" groups). Is such an upper out there? I'd hate to have to eventually get another upper if I could get one that would work.

Orion, that's going to be a tough bill to have one upper do what you want to do.

A true light weight upper will have trouble with 1MOA shooting. 6MOA? Probably okay with the LW barrel. "Urban warfare" or "CQB" (close quarter battle) is really in the 0-200 yard range at best.

It really sounds like you need 2 uppers. get yourself that Bushy 16" barrel (M4 or CAR) and use that for your CQB.

Next, you are correct that a SS barrel will be slightly more accurate than a chrome lined but they are not as durable long-term. Then again, you don't blast away a whole magazine with a good SS barrel either. You pick and choose your shots carefully so you don't really expend as many rounds with a highly accurate SS barrel.

You cannot go wrong with a Bushy. Also keep in mind, the Wilson barrels are the cheapest barrels on the market (hint hint). You will not get the accuracy you want from the Wilson barrels. They're not "bad" barrels, just not going to do well on the accuracy and they are not chrome lined like the Bushy. Chrome lining = long barrel life.

Thanks for the advise, CMOS. I realize that my idea would be a hard bill to fit. It is just what I would LIKE to have. Most likely, I'll go with the new postban M4. I have an AK right now, but I find it too heavy for the CQB that I would want the M4 upper for.

As far as a long distance rig (realizing that .223 isn't the best for that), I'll probably try to get an upper in SS, with fluted barrel, high rise flat top upper, and a good quality scope.

But, I'll stick to the M4 first, I guess. I just wish I had more money so I didn't have to chose! :)

Orion, good call on your long range gun except one thing - skip the high-rise receiver and stick to the standard mil-spec height. There is NO advantage to the high-rise.

The standard will allow you to potentially use that same receiver for ANY of the many sight options, including the iron sight systems.

Good shooting.
