Converting Savage Caliber

Rechambering a Savage

Without going into the inevitable "why do you want to do that?" I am curious what it would take to convert my Savage 111GL in .30-06 to .300 WinMag or or .308 caliber. I am thinking mostly undoing the barrel "collar", putting on a new one and reinstalling collar (obviously, making sure the barrel will fit the stock, etc).

.308 seems pretty straighforward, however, what (if any) problems might I run into with .300 WinMag? I am wondering if the bedding blocks in an '06 are different (weaker??) than those they install in factory "issued" 300 WinMags.

Just an idea...especially since I was thinking about installing the "tactical" barrel in the original's place (yes, then I really have stock/barrel fit issues...).

OK, I'll tell you why...RickD has brought out the competitor in me...knowing he's going to get an accurized 10FLP got me going...I know I am a better shot and the "arms race" has begun. Dang him!!!

Thanks in advance,

Oh...and what barrel should I get? How about scope? I was thinking of using the 4x15 scope that came with my Marlin .22 with a B-Square mount, using Blue Loctite to hold the screws in. For the stock, I was thinking of getting a wood rasp and cutting open the channel for the tactical barrel. For a bipod, I was going to adapt the one that is on my StG58...if that didn't work, some 3/8" welding rod taped to the barrel should do the trick...and use an old unused belt for a sling. The perfect tactical setup to beat Rick "I have an ItShootsPoor Enfield" D.

p.s. The first part was serious...the second was not, for the sarcastically impaired.... :)

Is the .300 WM the same size case head?

And how tight a group (and how many shots per group) is it gonna take to win this contest?

RickD, did you do this to Tim? As I recall, he was a normal "What's the best caliber for Whitetail?" poster. Now this.

Okay. Go to varminthunters.com, and look in the stuff fer sale section. I'm sure you can figure it out. If you can't, please give your firearms to someone who can.

Look for an outfit called Sharpshooters Supply. They'll sell you everything you need, Douglas barrel included. You may need to hog out your stock a little. They also sell VERY nice replacement stocks, and one of the best triggers for the Savage.

What you do is get a barrel vise and a wrench for the nut. You take the nut off, unscrew the old barrel, then screw the new one in with a headspace gauge inserted. When it's snug, you snug the locknut down, and you're ready to rock.

Going to a different case head size means that you'll need to buy a new boltface, and replace it. They're available for .222/223, .308, and magnum sizes. Just make sure you get really anal retentive about your headspace.

You're looking at a coupla/three hundred for the barrel, and maybe another hundred for the tools. People do this all the time.

You may also consider sending your action off to Paul Dorsey to have it blueprinted ($150). He's a benchrest shooter/smith who works on Savage actions.
