What is the best way to disconnect the firing pin safety on a series 80 officer model to put on a commander slide which has no firing pin safety?

The 70 series commander slide will work without doing anything to a 80 series frame. Its a 80 series slide on a 70 series frame which will not work without removing the 80 series parts. If you want to remove the 80 series parts from the frame you can, but I wouldn't then use this pistol for self-defense because it'll probably come back to haunt you in court.

Brownells sells a plate to replace the frame levers www.brownells.com

They stock two equivalent plates, from different vendors.

876-011-780 TJ's Custom frame slot blank $3.00

010-103-100 A&B Custom frame slot filler $3.25

As to legalities, the Series 80 firing pin lock is a "drop" safety device. I can't see how it would become an issue in a criminal or civil action arising from an intentional self-defense shooting.
