Converting DA GP100 to SA/DA

I got a really good deal on two DA only GP100s. I want to convert one to SA/DA. I've done this on a DAO Sig 226 by replaceing the hammer (and the sear mated to it) with a SA/DA one (also installed the decocking lever). So is that all I would have to change in the GP100, the hammer? Or is there something else.....just picked them up last night, haven't looked at the internals yet.

Yes

Yes all you have to do is change the hammer. I have done this to 4 rugers so far and all that was needed was to change out the hammer. So far all the hammers were used and picked up on e-bay or other sites. Usually about $20 each. No problems with fit or engagement at all. Ruger hammers "seem" to be fairly consistent with just being a drop in part in my experience.

If you can find a hammer you're good to go. But Ruger won't sell you one so you'll have to find one on your own.

With enough money, time and patience, it COULD be done. Hammers are NOT available from Ruger. You need to fit the trigger, hammer and properly cut their interfaces. The tolerances will have to be checked and there are areas of concern regarding the polishing/fitting and stoning of the action internals, trigger, hammer and frame clearance. IOWs, it would be cheaper and faster to trade for a DA/SA GP-100 in the first place.

Oh man... the last time I bought parts for a GP-100 from Ebay I ended up paying $50. I got the complete lower with the parts... it is still a deal since Ruger won't sell certain items that wears out quick when you do quick DA shooting such as in Steel Challenge and USPSA. Sorry I'm not selling just informing. You could get lucky sometimes. josh

Yup, it seems like finding a hammer is going to be the hard part. Numrich doesn't have any in stock. Ruger won't sell them. Nothing on ebay or gunbroker. Nothing at Brownells or Midway (didn't really expect there to be). I did find a Rugerdiscussion site and was going to advertise a WTB on the market forum but they say they're not taking new users and there's a guy there that's already been looking for one for the past month without finding one. Anyone have any suggesstions on where else I might try?

Don't know but if you see them take advantage of it... I thought I got robbed with my purchase but seeing that the parts are hard to find it's a bargain. I got a 3" barrel I'm itching to get installed on one of my 6" GP100s. josh
