Converting Colt O.P. to Carry Snubbie?

I have a Colt O.P. and a Commando and am thinking about the possibility of converting them to carry guns. Would probably have the barrels cut to 2 1/2", have the hammer bobbed and if feasible have the grip frame contour changed. I was wondering if this is something that people would have had done in the past. Is there someone who would specialize in this type of work? Anybody have any ideas????

MO, it could certainly be done. I don't "specialize" in that kind of work but I've done the same thing for a few S&Ws and one Colt OP that I recall. Cylinder & Slide might be more the specialist in work like this but feel free to e-mail me about it if you like. George

You would almost certainly come out ahead by trading the guns in on a barrel length and grip configuration that suits you rather than trying to modify what you have. It can be done, but it is VERY costly, and it destroys the residual value of the base gun. Nobody will buy one cut up and modified like that, regardless of how well it has been done, for anything like the money that you will have in the piece.

Clemson is certainly correct. Behlerts did this once for a customer who backed out at the last minute leaving them with what I thought was a real nice custom snubbie. It was an OP with the barrel cut to 3" the but nicely round butter with the grips fit to it. It really felt good in your hand. A solid piece of work. The only reason I did'nt buy it was the price. More than I could afford(price of gun and then custom work) These days I really wish I bit the bullet and bought it I had many chances you see. That gun bounced around the shop for quite a few years befour they finually sold it. Combonation of price and rthe size of it. It was bigger than a 3" model 13 S&W which came out about that time.
The gun was a nice idea that came out well but apprently it was/is an aquired taste. If you make them plan on keeping them for life. An easier and cheaper solution would be to look for a pair of RB model 10's or 13's with the 3" barrel lengths. At least they would have some resale value. (and an added bonus they are actually smaller in size.) :)
