Converting a 700 ADL to a Long Range Precision Rifle?

I have a Remington 700 ADL in 30-06 with a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5x10 scope. I actually do not do much hunting and would much rather have a long range, precision rifle.

Would I just be better off selling it? Or can I "upgrade" the existing rifle I have?

Thanks.

The 700 action is a great starting point for a very accurate rifle.

To better answer you question could your provide some more information on your ideal "long range, precision rifle" such as:
Budget?
Expected range?
Hitting power at range?
Expected accuracy?
Will you reload?
Will you be carrying the rifle?

Dave,

As mentioned by stick, really depends on what your definition of accuracy is.

Glass-bedding, free floating the barrel & doing a minor trigger tweak may be all that's necessary to get your rifle to shoot well under MOA with the right load. Might do it already. The right load combo is sometimes the only thing needed to make a rifle really shine.

Whole deal, if you're handy with tools, will cost about $25 & depending, about a week & that's for the glass to fully set up.

If you have 10 left thumbs and more money, I'd take a hard look at an H&S precision stock. Ugly stick for looks, but that aluminum V-block the action sits in is one good way to secure the action and free float the barrel. Others make a pillar bed stock or if you are handy with tools, you can do it yourself. If you don't want to fool with it at all, take a look at the 700VS for short action or Sendero long action. Mine plus several others here have had good service with them. As I understand it, at least some of the Savage models have done very well.

Price of a HS Precision stock is over $200. You may want to do a cost-effective analysis. New barrel can run you several hundreds, depending on who you want to rebarrel the gun. Also consider new rings and bases. The scope you have is good enough and I wouldn't change it (unless you want to spend $175 for Preimer Reticles to change it to mil-dot). 1/4" click adjustment knobs will cost you more (or Stoney Creeks for $49.95).

Alternative would be to sell the gun and get a Remington 700 Varminter. It's the same gun as the PSS but has a lighter stock (and is more portable). Use the same scope.
