Converting A 686 S&w To 9mm?

I saw this mentioned on the idpa thread below. the name mentioned was TK CUSTOM. Well I went to their site and there was NO info on said conversion. This 9mm revolver is exactly what I have been looking for to take advantage of the cheap 9mm ammo at walmart. It will make power plinking a blast. I already am looking for a 9mm cyclinder for my sa ruger as well. 9's are getting real cheap to shoot these days so a nice custom 9mm da revolver seems like an execellent idea. So any and all info and/or links to info on this conversion is requested. Many thanks. Now I need to buy a 686!

Just E-mail them at TK Custom. They responded to me emails about the conversions a couple of months ago and even gave a price.

Hope you find out something.

I don't think this conversion would be legal under IDPA rules. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here. Interesting plinker though.

Technically it isn't legal, but at a club level match, likely no one would care.
The problem with this particular conversion is that the walls are straight for .38 Super, which means that the tapered 9mm round will become straight walled upon firing. Also, the bullet will not be properly lined up for the jump down the cylinder. I expect that accuracy will suffer. But it sure would be neat. I'd like to have a real 9mm cylinder made for my GP-100. Maybe now that Bill is gone, RIP Bill, maybe it will come to pass.

Tom K. charges $350 for that conversion. You would have to shoot a lot of really cheap 9mm instead of ordinarily cheap .38 Spl to make it worthwhile. Plus the trouble of clipping and unclipping.

Richard Heinie said his shot 9x23 very well but that 9x19 was less accurate but adequate for IDPA (if allowed.)

I agree!

A 9mm revolver with moon clips for fast speedloading would be great for action shooting like IDPA. But as noted above conversions are not allowed and may loose some accuracy.

I shoot a 686 4" in IDPA using 130 gr FMJ 38s and have had the cylinder charge holes champhered for the fastest reloads possible. In addition, before each match I make sure the gun is clean and then I swab each cylinder with FP-10. When I tip the gunbutt down with my left hand the empty casings vertually fall out allowing a fast reload. I am almost as fast as my competitors who use moon clips in their 625 .45s. I buy my .38 Federal Eagles from Natchezzs for about $8.00 a box delivered to my back door.

If one of the major manufacturors would introduce a 4" moonclip 9mm revolver I would surely take a look but for now I am extremely happy shooting the .38 686!!!
