Convert DAO SP101 to single/double action

Does anyone know what is involved in converting a "hammerless" DAO SP101 to one with a hammer spur that shoots both single and double action. Obviously, the hammer has to be replaced; what else is involved? I see quite a few DAO SP101's significantly cheaper than the single or double action models.

a good gunsmith may be able to help you BUT parts may not be available.
Ruger probably will not sell anyone the parts (hammer & trigger). They will
not alter the original configuration of their guns. cheapest and quickest
soulution is sell it and buy what you want or trade.

I'm not sure that Ruger won't convert your revolver to SA/DA.
The people to get the last word from is Ruger.
Contact them and ask. Asking is free.

As above, Ruger will not sell a hammer unless they install it and they keep the old hammer.
For liability reasons they try to keep control of critical parts like these and will allow only factory installation.

I don't know if Ruger uses a different sear for their DAO guns. Some folks just put a spurless hammer on a revolver, and call it DAO, but such a gun could theoretically still be cocked. A true DAO will have a DAO sear; my guess would be a dedicated Ruger DAO will require a sear change, as well as a hammer change, to go conventional DA.

Yoda you may seek, hmm?...

For gunsmith ?s about the Ruger SP101 line, I'd contact the smiths & wizards of www.geminicustoms.com .
They do great smithing on many Ruger SP101, GP100s & 1911a1 pistols.
I, myself really like the old warhorse DA only SP101 snub. ;)
A Ruger SP101 DA only .357magnum was my very 1st handgun, bought in the fall of 1993.
The grips were awful, but I liked the robust action & easy carry.

ps; I'd save your $ and just buy a NIB DA/SA revolver if that's what you really want. Gunsmith work or after market parts may cost mucho $$$. :(

Try getting use to the trigger.

My DAO sp101 "stages" really well.

Cock the hammer with the trigger until the cylinder stop engages, the hammer will break clean with just a little more pull. I can stop the hammer evrytime right before it breaks, just a little dry fire/practice and you might love it.

Here's a novel idea. Why not simply see if you can manually cock the hammer (on the DAO Sp101). If you can, then obviously the gun has a conventional sear. Voila, no gunsmith needed (or contacting Ruger, either). If that turns out to be the case, then ALL you will need will be a conventional (spurred) hammer. As the hammer can be easily removed and replaced in the Rugers, due to the modular design......and the parts interchangeability on the Rugers should be very good (for the same reason)......you could likely just replace the hammer yourself. Try Numrich as a source for such a part.

I doubt that Ruger installed a completely different set of internal parts for the "DAO" version of the gun. That would require much engineering - for no good reason. I'll almost bet that the only difference is a non-spurred hammer.
