conversion to 300 wby

convert to 300 WBY'

Dear shooter:
The question must be asked: "from what?"
The 300 wby' and 300 Win. Mag. are really two peas in a pod! Both have Belted Magnum bolt faces so a good action with a magnum bolt-face would be great.
All things being equal I'd rather have a good old 30-06 - it'll do anything the "magnums" will.

P.S. - I do not like the Weatherby cartridges!

LOL, me either Harry

My question would be why not just buy a new Weatherby Vanguard in 300WTBY? I don't understand it unless you are wanting to convert a model700 or model 70 action into the 300WTBY Mag. If that is what you are after, then use a magnum like 7mm Mag or 300 Mag and then have the work done for you. It would be a lot cheaper staring out with the Vanguard though.

You may find that putting a new barrel on is the cheapest way to go. Shilen has PTC barrels for various actions that require setting back the shoulder only.

the action should be faced for a magnum like 7mm rem mag, 300\338 win mag, or 458

The easiest standard caliber for conversion would be the .300 Win Mag, but there might be a problem in the magazine, since the .300 Wea Mag
OAL is about .26" longer.

For practical purposes, the two cartridges are not much different, but on paper the Wea Mag puts out an extra 300 fps. Naturally, there is also extra blast and recoil. I don't know whether, in the long term, that extra push might cost in terms of wear on a rifle not designed for the more powerful round.
