Contender impulse buy, I think not!!!

Walked into a LGS last week just to look around. No intentions of buying anything. Just a good place to hang out. I told the owner I was just looking around unless something jumped up and said "buy me". After fondling an FEG Browning High Power copy, and pondering it's worth, he said come down to the end of the counter.
There in the case, a G2 Contender with a ported Super 14 35 Remington barrel, a 14" blued 22 LR Match barrel with a 1.5-4 Burris scope on it, and a Boyt case.
I almost fell over when I noticed the price tag. $250 .
I don't think this was an impulse purchase, I think it was an I'll kick myself if I don't purchase! Always wanted a Contender

The shop owner told me the 35 Rem barrel was originally blued, but the guy that owned it had it ported ( Mag-na-port style) and stripped and coated with the silver coat finish. I am assuming the frame is stainless though, because of the black synthetic grip & forearm. It does attract a strong magnet, but some stainless steel does. Or could it be Armaloy? I don't know if they had the G2 in Armaloy. Maybe a "parts gun" build, but I think it was a steal of a deal anyway.:D
I don't know a whole lot about Contenders, but I'm sure I'll get plenty of information on this forum.
The gun store has hooked an addict! I'm already thinking about a couple more barrels, and scopes! Move the Burris to the 35 barrel, new scope for the 22. 45-70 barrel with muzzle tamer, and open sights, and a 204 Ruger barrel & new scope.
Please, someone stop me!!!

There is no stopping it......

I'm up to two frames and about 9 barrels, and far from done.:D

You can't stop it. But you can control it, a little.;) if your will is strong!

No cure, just learn to live with it, and love one accurate shot! Because thats what Contenders do!

I've got a really fun barrel, 6" 9mm Luger. When guys start talking 9mms and accuracy, I tell them I've got one that will group better than theirs. And sometimes we bet. You should see the looks on their faces when I show up at the range with my pet. And yes, it out shoots all the service style autos.
I may take longer than they do, but I get smaller groups!
Haven't tried it against a Sig P210 yet (reported to be the most accurate auto), but if the day comes, I'll do my best!:D

I'm a sport about it, I don't take their money. I just like seeing their jaws drop! Heheheheeeeeee!:D Contenders are FUN!!!!!
.22LR, .22 Hornet, .222 Rem, .30-30Win, 9mm Luger, .357 Mag, .44 Mag, .45 Colt, .45 Colt/.410, .45 Win Mag, .45-70...ok, 11 barrels ;)

If you want a real eye opener for recoil, get one of the old octagon .44 Mag barrels (10")! I was so shocked, I said a bad word out loud at the range!
Nothing like any .44 Mag revolver or auto pistol at all! Much worse than my 14" ported .45-70!

And BTW, you stole that gun! The frame alone goes $4-450 used!

You did steal that piece. I don't own a G2 but would have bought that one in a heartbeat.

I'm with you. 44 mag in the Contender is a bruiser, more so than my 45-70 also but I really haven't pushed by 45/70 loads.

Can you get a .223 barrel for them???
Yes, probably easier to ask what caliber can't you get in a Contender. If you are a serious loader the Contender is your platform to play.

Interesting...

... Will be looking to pick me up one a them...never thought about getting one before.

I just seen a .270 barrel for them.

That is a smoking hot deal on a contender!! Good for you, however, there are no .270 win barrels for the contender, they are encore only.

Start saving money, you'll need more barrels, scopes and so on....soon you'll have a whole safe full of barrels!

Here's a site with a ton of contender parts and barrels:

I've got a G2 Contender in Stainless. The action/receiver/trigger is magnetic. I only have the 410/45 Colt barrel at this time. There are a couple of barrels that are on my want list - 14" 22 LR, 12" 22 WMR, and a 14" 6.8 SPC. I don't mind if I get them in blue or stainless (I also kind of want a 357 Max). I'm not sure how to grip the pistol - hand on forearm or both hands on the grip (I do both and also one hand it sometimes).

G2

45-70 barrel with muzzle tamer, and open sights, and a 204 Ruger barrel & new scope.
I have both a 10" .44 magnum and a Super 16 barrel in 45-70. There is no question that the .44 barrel is a hard kicker - I broke three Red Dots before finding one durable enough.......but it doesn't kick like the .45-70 loaded up. That's the one that the load books write about "Recoil is severe". Yeah, it is
.My favorite barrel? A 10" .30-30 Win.

Congratulations. I just back from a gun show this evening. Even used barrels were still going for $200 or more. The scope is probably worth more than you paid for the whole combo! -7-

I love my .44 mag and .35 Rem Super 14!
The .35 is amazingly accurate and works very well on ground hogs and deer.
When shooting the .44 from a rest you need some padding under your elbow because it definitely hurts if you don't:D
My .44 will shoot 1 1/2" @ 100 yds all day long too!

Yep, I'm feelin' the Contender fervor alright. Reading all your posts only makes it worse. Good!:D
One question about the Burris scope. Will it stand up to the 35 Remington recoil? I'm thinking because it is in silver finish, the former owner swapped it back and forth between the 22 to the 35 barrels.
As I said in my OP, the 35 barrel is ported. It has slots in the Mag-na-port style at 11 O'Clock and 1 O'Clock, and also at 9 O'Clock and 3 O'Clock.
I think I'll wait 'till the weather gives me a break and I cam try it out as is before I start swapping things around.

Now I have to stop buying semi-autos and revolvers, just barrels and scopes.
At least I won't have to fill out those stupid 4473 forms for barrels.:D

I should get my 18" 204 Ruger MGM barrel in here in the next 1-2 weeks for my encore... gonna be a tack driver pistol!
