Contender barrel info please

I have a G2 with a 10" .22 lr and a 14" .204 ruger. Both are a hoot to shoot. I want more barrels. I see something like 'super' 14" barrel or 14 'bull' barrel. What do 'super' and 'bull' refer to? Do they fit a G2frame? I also see 'octagon' barrels. I know what an octagon looks like but does the octagon fit a regular G2 frame? Advantages/disadvantages of any of the barrels I've mentioned?

All factory contender barrels will fit on a g2 frame. You might need a new forend with a larger barrel channel for the larger diameter bull barrels though. The super 14 was just a 14" barrel that was made at one time for the contender. Try this website for parts : http://www.eabco.com/tcpage.html
enjoy, they are addicting.

Be careful not to get the Contender Barrel Bug or you will wind up getting more barrels than was intended. They are all well made and great shooters. I really cannot add much to what mikejonestkd.
The only barrels you have to look out for, as far as fit, are the Armory Alloy. These are fairly easy to spot. ..... ;)

Be Safe !!!

Not the dreaded fever.

I've got the fever alright. I begin to breakout when I start reading some of the contender threads. It's not so much the cost of barrels , but the glass... I'll be down to two squares a day.

Contender

You might as well check out the specialty pistol forum,The T/C platforms are pretty popular there.

I have a passion for the Contender

This post reminded me back in the early 80' I visited a gun shop in North Charleston, SC and rummaging around came across a box of Contender barrels. Picked up a 221 8" octagon barrel, iron sights and the matching original Contender grip and fore-end for a song. Been a fan ever since. Very accurate and a "hoot" to shoot. Still shooting Contenders today.

Re: Contender Barrel info please

The info about barrels and such you can get straight from Thompson center. You may also try a few of the TC contender custom sites.

With my recent experiences and several others I have communicated with, stay away (miles away) from MGM. One of their machinists in particular has some repeat issues on the actual barrel fitting and customizing. Also very quick to be rude and is a poor professional. On the flip side, SSK industries has been working on Contenders since about 1969 and has a superb reputation.

The MGM barrels are cheaper and it does seem that occasionally you get some really good work from them but they are cheaper by half on a lot of their barrels than their competition. Take the chance and spend the money, you won't be disappointed in a SSK or Bullberry build. Also, just so you know, I have a superb barrel from MGM but subsequent barrels were screwed up on 2 occasions dealing with one set of barrels. The barrels are not the problem as they are from reputable barrel builders such as Schilen and Greenmountain but it is the gunsmith and machinist capabilities in finishing the final product. This is what seems to be a hit and a miss. They are also less than honest (from personal communication issues), are not members of the BBB, refuse to stand behind their work, and basically make excuses and point fingers when something is wrong.

Well I just have to post the flip side. I have 4 MGM barrrels and have never had an issue. I've never found them to be anything but very nice and accomodating.

Wait for sales. I just got a great deal through Natchez on a 14inch 45/70 for my G2. It was cheaper then my IHEA discount directly through T/C. I'd stick to the modern G2 barrels, some people have had issues with the older frame barrels. Plus the 10inch octagon barrels have a real kick to them.

I've bought 2 MGM barrels, you design your own barrel from the ground up. Very pleased with the quality and quick service.

Beware of the bug!

I'll second that. I bought, or stole as I've been told, a G2 Stainless with a 35 Remington Super 14 barrel, 14" 22 LR Match barrel, Buris 1.5-4 scope, and Boyt case for $250. I've added a 14" 223 bull barrel, T/C 2-7 scope, weaver 4X scope, and SSK 10" 45-70 barrel so far. Just starting. Think it's gonna turn out to be the most expensive $250 I've ever spent!!!:D

BTW, I know about Gray Beard Outdoors, but what is that specialty pistol forum mentioned?

Thanks Okie. Just checked it out, I'll have to sign up. Oh boy, just what I need. Another gun forum to keep me up at night, and from things I'm supposed to be doing around the house during the day. I'll tell my wife it's your fault!:D
