Contemplating on selling my two 870's

I dont really have anymore trust in my 870 shotguns anymore, with all the problems that keep arising with them, such as the action sticking after firing, shells not ejecting, flexitabs coming loose from the reciever and magazine cap coming loose during firing.

I saw a used Benelli nova vent rib barrel at a store going for 269. I'm thinking of selling my 870's then getting that Benelli nova, then having a gunsmith chop down the barrel to 18 1/2 inches.

I'm really tired of fixing problems with my two shotguns, I got 870 express shotguns on the well know fact that they are super reliable, it's just that I never experienced that myself....

Should I ditch my 870's and get a Benelli nova?

While I wont comment on the "should you" idea, I will offer this. If you are going to part with 2 shotguns for a Benelli pump, might I suggest going with a SuperNova instead? Or possibly finding a SNT (SuperNova Tactical)? The SN, in general, is more "polished" and gives you the option of using different stocks. The Nova is of a "fixed" design in this respect.

Just something to consider.

You must have sh@t for luck. I have never had a problem with any of the Remington or Mossberg shotguns that I own. I have an 870 that is used and fired every hunting seaon that has not been cleaned, only wiped down, for at least 10 years and never a problem. If I did have an ongoing problem I would contact the manufacturer. I would bet that they will do what ever is necessary to make you happy.

I too have never had a problem with any of my 870s. Are you reloading your own shells and making them hot? I don't think I have ever heard of any huge problems from anyone eles either.

my rem 870 has about 1000 rounds through it,its about 12 yrs. old.. wonderful shotgun, couldnt imagine not having it.. are yours new? dont give up on them, after all they are remington's..

I am very sorry that you are having so many problems with your 870's.

I have spent about 40 years with at least one of these shotguns in my custody. I have had a few failures, I have fired well over 50,000 rounds out of this type of scattergun, I have found them to be like hammers, if you do your job, they do theirs. I have serviced and worked on Express 870's and though I feel they are a step down from the Wingmaster, they seem to be effective tools.

Not to be snotty, but perhaps there is more to this than the guns? Are you understanding the operation and maintenance of these guns? I am only asking because some folks have a hard time servicing equipment. If that might be the case I know of a web site that sells a Armorers course video for the 870, perhaps it would be a worth while investment.

What ever your decision, Good Luck & Be Safe

If you no longer feel confident with the 870s then you should change to a gun that you trust. I have owned and shot 870s and 1100s a lot and had very good luck with them (trust them). Whether the problem is the guns or not, you need a gun that you have faith in. Good luck .

It's been too long since my 870's performed normally when I take it to a range, as of now everytime I fire them, the more "Injured" they get. I ploped down too much money already on gunsmithing that solved little.

i too think there is more to this than is being told, i have helped run a trap range at out gun club for close to 40 years, mostly mowing, refilling traps, gethering up busted birds and such, plus i shoot 4 md 870,s. in that time i have watched countless shells fired from quite a few 870,s along with a load of other shotguns and the rem,s ran with fewer problems than any others that were used as much. a friend just bought a browning bt-99 grade 3 at right around 2100.00 and he does not break any more birds than i do with my rem 870 trap(my 870 trap is over 25yrs old), we both shoot 22-25(more 22,s than 25,s. eastbank. ps wait untill you need parts for most imported shotguns.

My lifetime total shells fired through 870s, both agency weapons and mine, has to be getting close to six figures.

Total parts needing replacement, two firing pin springs.

To be blunt, I do not think it's the shotguns.

If you're near MD, I'll give you $100 each, sight unseen.....

It's official, I bought a BRAND NEW Benelli Nova pump today! They had two left in stock and I got it, it's just 10 days now till it's home.

Looks like I'm gonna start the process of parting with my two 870's then, thanks for everyones opinions.

I could see a problem if it was one 870 but both:eek: I have shot 870 for years in snow, rain and temps. in the single numbers and have never had a problem:) Used one for years trap shooting never had a problem:confused:
