Contacting your reps, etc.

Hi Folks,

Hopefully others will benefit from whatever help you can provide.

I've contacted my state rep and senator by phone. I've also emailed my congressman.
I've never actually talked directly with anyone on the phone, just given my input and concern. I've emailed through the Roll Call website, never had any response. Is this wasting time?

I've have yet to actually write a letter and mail it. It's starting to look like this is how I should go about business.

Can any of you tell me the best way to be heard? What do you do? Obviously the easier it is, the more people will do it.

Thanks. Hoppy

Hoppy,

What's best? Type out your email. Send it. Fax it. Then mail it. Then call.

Want to be even more effective? Here's a trick.

I have "sponsored" a few gun owners that hate to do this stuff. I am now a ghost writer for them. Not only do I write their Rep's, but "they" also send letters to the editor from time to time. I just rephrase my own letter, and send it off.

Keep it short and to the point, and provide them with a copy in case someone follows up on "their" letter.

It's not deceptive...I'm just helping them express themselves.

Have fun :)

Hoppy, I am also very active in harrasing, ..er...contacting my Reps. Without a doubt your best bet is to have a hard copy in their hands. Snail mail, FAX, email and finally the phone call. I generally do all of the above.

Also, it is very important that you keep your letters very short. Long letters will simply be "skimmed" to locate a subject then counted on a tally sheet. Hand writing a letter has the best chance of actually getting into your Rep's hand (rare, but it can happen).

FYI, here's a TOLL FREE number to reach the capitol switchboard. Just ask for your Rep's office - 1-888-449-3511

In additon, be sure to get 2 of your friends to do the same thing. Then have those 2 recruit 2 more and so on.

Remember, your letter alone means nothing. Your letter WITH several others is a voice.

This works both ways.

Thank them for supporting any pro-gun legislation, and occasionally some other bill.

At the "Meet Your Constituent" meeting here a couple of months ago, I thanked my boy for voting on some non-gun bill, and the guy lit up. They're probably so used to getting dumped on, a "thank you" makes an impact all out of proportion to the event.
