Considering a New Plinker

Opinions on:

Remington 597 HB Synthetic

Ruger 10/22 Heavy Barreled Synthetic

Savage 64 TRR-SR

Any other reccomendations. I've got a 552 Speedmaster that my dad gave me as a kid. The gun is pristine and I want to keep it that way to hand down to my boys as a family heirloom. This is something that I can shoot and beat up knocking about the woods.

new plinker

Your list is good, would be even better if you had the Marlin 60 on it. I have the Savage and Ruger, My go to gun is always the Marlin 60!:) Cliff

I'd cast my vote for anything CZ.

That said, I am custom building a 10/22 right now (my first 10/22) and I have a remmy 597. I love the remmy, but I usually take it out when I bring someone along who may not share my enjoyment for a nice accurate bolt .22 like my CZ's. CZ does make a semi auto (the 512 I beleive), but I don't own one.

There is always a Henry to consider as well :)

For the Budget-minded, the best deal in the USA is the Marlin 795 or 60...sub-MOA (if you can do your part) for under $150 :)
But try to avoid the 2005-2011 serials...some minor QC issues there...
so you'll want MM88##### (2012) or pre-2005 (avoid the 95#### to 89#### serials)

QC hiccups include:
Misshapen 3/8" accessory rail (makes it hard to mount a scope/red dot).
Bad Crowns
Bad barrel/action fit
Burrs on action rails/Bolt
All minor stuff that any half-decent shade-tree gunsmith can fix...but its still a PITA to have to fix ;)
They don't all have problems, but there are enough out there to cause concerns, as they say...
that's why you INSPECT carefully ANY rifle/pistol/shotgun before purchase...and if you don't know guns, take someone with ya who DOES :)

Avoid the Remington 597. I had to go back to the factory twice, once for the bolt throwing the extractor plunger on the third shot, and again because the front sight was mounted a few degrees off making the rifle impossible to zero.

Another vote for either Marlin! Model 60 or Model 795 are hard to beat! Shop around and you can get them both for a good price!:D

I just saw that Dick's Sporting Goods sells Marlin 60s with synthetic stocks for $139.00. That is less than you would spend switching out the trigger on a 10/22. I wish I had bought the Marlin 60 rather than the Remington 597 which has had to go back to the factory twice already.

Have you seen the new CMMG's, you can change out uppers on those and you have both a 22lr or 223.

Pretty cool, I just had a couple of guys buy some and they love them.

CMMG Quebec 22lr
