Well, recently I have been doing some reading of contemporary conservative authors. Not wanting to suffer tunnel vision or education by randomly picking books off the shelf it seemed like a good idea to solicit suggestions here at TFL. So let's have it, what interesting conservative books or history are you reading? Here are some recents...

Hating Whitey and Other Progressive Causes by David Horowitz

The Long March by Roger Kimball

The Cousin's Wars by Kevin Philips

Road to Serfdom by F. Hayek

Soul of Battle (author forgotten)

Russia Before the Revolution by Richard Pipes

In the Path of God by Daniel Pipes (brother of above)

No One Left to Lie To by Chris Hitchens

Various books by Stephen Ambrose

On the hit list: Crucible of War, and Abolition of Britain.

The Ten Things You Can't Say In America by Larry Elder

The Incredible Bread Machine: A Study of Capitalism, Freedom & the State by R. W. Grant

The Closing of the American Mind by Allan Bloom

An Enemy of the State: The Life of Murray N. Rothbard by Justin Raimondo

I haven't read any of these contemporary authors... yet.

Lately I've been concentrating on some works by slightly older authors. Common Sense by Thomas Paine. The Federalist Papers by Hamilton, Madison and Jay. Great reading there too.

Although I haven't sought it out yet, try looking for "Arsenic and Red Tape". Recommended by my grandfather and written in the 1930's (I think). This book basically tells everything that has already come to pass. Perhaps a look into the future?

I was a Koontz fan long before he was popular-- the man can write....
For books in no particular order:
"The Weapons Shops of Isher" A.E. vanVoght-- a 1930's era RKBA sci-fi, short-story & novel versions, a bit archaic, but still the truth about armed citizens vs. slaves of the state.
"Total Resistance" von Dach Bern, ISBN#0-87364-021-7--Do-it-yourself Guerilla warfare.
"Betrayal" Bill Gertz-- and any later books by him- our national security? It's GONE! He has a website: http://gertzfile.com
and if you *really* want to scare yourself, go here, & be prepared to dig deep:
http://www.softwar.net

Most anything by ( dead ) Phillip K. Dick...
Gotta run--

I'm reading some firearms-related books lately.

That Every Man Be Armed
Samurai, Mountie, and the Cowboy

Larry Elder's book and John Ross's book should be coming for X-mas.

"The Conservative Mind: From Burke to Eliot" by Russell Kirk is now regarded as an essential introduction to modern conservative thinking. It is recommended if you are looking for a broad historical review of modern conservatism.

"Witness to Hope: The Biography of Pope John Paul II"

An awe-inspiring story of what one man, armed only with faith, can accomplish against the crushing power of the State.
