Things to know as a new resident.
Machine Guns OK, unless they are select fire. Yup, thats right, Class III full auto ok, but if it can be set to also be semi-auto (select fire) then it is a no-no. It is also a no-no if it is a banned-by-name semi-auto assault weapon.
CT has got to be the only state in the country where people have Class III weapons that have had the select fire parts intentionally removed. This is all still subject to the provisions of named-assault-weapons ban/registration law. Existing assault weapons had to be registered years ago, and they can no longer be registered. I also think that they can not be transferred.
This has to be the only state where you can buy an M-60 or an SW-5 but you can't buy an HK 94!
Other strange quirks... two week waiting period to purchase a long gun, UNLESS you have pistol license or a hunting license, then it is over the counter.
Possession of a handgun in home is OK without a license, but you are pretty much allowed to only take it out of the house to get it repaired or when you move, UNLESS you have a pistol permit.
If you don't want to carry, but you just want to buy a handgun and take it home, there is a license for that too, but mostly people just get carry licenses because the paperwork is pretty much the same.
Packing.org has some very good stuff on the process of getting a carry permit that I will not bother to duplicate here. Quick summary: Get local permit (don't forget to check box for deadly weapons in addition to pistol permit, lets you carry knives & some other goodies) then go over to state police headquarters and get state permit same day.
The best piece of advice that I received, but did not follow
was to apply for a non-resident permit before you move here using your (Your NYS permit should be fine) existing permit. Otherwise you have to prove pistol safety (but not markmanship) training with a certificate from NRA, CT State Police or their equivalent of the DEP.
(This is all pretty fresh for me, having just moved up here from the Peoples Republic of Maryland 8 weeks ago. I think maybe this represents out of the fire, into the frying pan
)
