Confused by the new WASR (AK-type) rifles from AIM

Here's the ad copy from their website. AIM even uses the same photo for WASR and SAR-1.

After reading about WASR rifles on AK-47.net I'm a little confused. Some of the posters there said that the rifle lacks the "dimples" in the receiver to keep the magazines snug in the mag well because these were originally made to use single-stack mags. The AIM photo has these dimples.

Other posters say these should come with the "Dragunov" stock. Not so in the photo.

I've also read that you MUST use US-made floor plates and followers with the converted WASR guns. The AIM ad does not seem to support this.

So what's the real story on these rifles? Are these converted single-stack guns? Do the mags fit loosely? Do I need special magazine components? Should I spend the extra forty bucks and just get a SAR-1???

Up till a month ago they stated putting pistol grip stocks on them. I had one and the mags were real lose in it always wobbling around.

The WASR's are indeed converted single stack guns. I have heard that the mags fit a bit loosely in some guns. To the best of my knowledge they do not have the dimples. My guess is that AIM just put a picture of a SAR on their website hoping noone would know the difference. I also hear that the WASR's converted mag wells usually have some burrs and such on the edges that need to be taken care of. God knows the monkeys at CIA arent careful with what they do. IMHO, get the SAR.

Good Luck

I have a SAR-2 and a WASR and was so dismayed by the chimpanzee assembly job that both are on consignment with zero rounds through them!

Don't sell them without shooting first!

Tropical Z - You're right - they're rough, as AKs have always been. I've shot plenty of rounds through friends SARs and have had no malfunctions. It is not a pretty rifle, nor particularly accurate, but it is fun to shoot. Try yours before selling them, they might grow on you. If not, then I might be interested in buying that SAR-2 you hate so much... What are you asking for it?

I would have to agree. These guns are just ALOT of fun to shoot. Yeah, some of them have a few small issues. Nothing that cant be fixed though. I love my SAR-1, and know exactly what it is. I don't expect it to sit there and look pretty, just go bang when i pull the trigger NO MATTER WHAT. I mean.....it's an AK for pete's sake! If you want pretty, go buy a Weatherby.

Tropical Z - Any problems with the SAR and WASR series (apart from the softer US hammers) are noticable from the outside of the gun. This is why its always good to look over what you are buying BEFORE you buy it. And even if you mail ordered it, whatever problems you have with yours are pretty easily fixed.

Good Luck

I'll buy your SAR2 if ImtheNRA drops out. I have one, but could use another for a custom job.

Please email me if interested.

The main thing i can't overlook is the fact that both guns have a front sight that is canted to the left almost a quarter of an inch! A friend also brought in a WASR at the same time as me and his was worse than mine. The WASR is at a shop that requires a month of sale time before you can get it back and its been there a week. The SAR-2 i could get anytime, but in all honesty i'm sure i could get more for it on consignment than anywhere else. They recommended i put it up for $335.Who knows if it will sell for that,or if i should be trying for that much.
P.S both were brought in just for me,or else i would never have bought them.
