Conflicting info. +P in a Taurus 85 UL?

I'm a little confused.
I just got a Taurus 85 Ultra-Lite a few days ago. The aluminum and stainless steel model.
The manual says +Ps may be dangerous to shoot, but the web site says it's +P rated.
I've searched TFL and couldn't find a definite answer. Can anyone say for sure if the 85 UL can handle +Ps or not?

I'm not planning to shoot +Ps through it, but would like to know its capabilities and limitations.

Thanks

If it's a new gun, it is absolutely rated for +P.
I bought one about 3 years ago.
I don't have it anymore, but I am thinking it said +P at the front of the cylinder, where the yoke locked up.

According to this, they are +P rated.
You have a fine weapon.
Enjoy it!

.38 spl. +P rated

While the M85 is +P rated, that load could be dangerous
to shoot for the following reasons.

- If the cylinder is slightly out of align or the gap
twixt cylinder and barrel is more than, I think,
0.09" there is the potential of high velocity bullet
shavings spewing out to the side. (I cannot
recall the technical term for this.)
- Fired indoors without ear protection (i.e., in a
home self-defense incident), the potential for
ear damage is increased.
- While the Taurus pistols have a lifetime warranty,
firing +P ammo always poses the kB! (kaboom)
cylinder failure risk. Low risk, but a risk.

Like you, I have little inclination to use +P in a .38
as data is inconclusive on whether it is more effective
in "one shot" stops. But mainly because it is so damn
loud fired indoors and also because I am very
comfortable with the .38 Special Nyclad round for
its added penetration potential.

So, if the manufacturer says the pistols are +P rated,
doesn't that settle the argument?

+P's are ok

I have an 85UL and it IS rated for +P. I've shot quite a few through it. The only problem I have had is bullet creep with 158gr. When I stay with jacketed 125gr, no problem. Great little snubbie at a bargain price. Too bad more people don't know about this little gun.

I played with a Ti 85...the older black model at a local store. Very tempting. I love the weight and the feel, but had to have a 357...I am just a glutton for punishement....:D
Shoot well

I also have the M85UL, alloy frame and cylinder with stainless barrel liner. Due to some confusion, I called Taurus customer service. They assured me it was rated for +P. I would not recommend it as a steady diet (couldn't afford it as target ammo anyway), but have no qualms about using the +P as defensive ammo.

I also have great confidence using .38spl (not + anything) as a defensive load. It used to be the standard for most US police agencies and military tactical aircraft crews (Viet Nam era) for years. Use what you feel comfortable with. Many a BG has been neutralized by plain old .38s.
