Conclusion: We should immediately pull out of Washington, D.C.

Thought for the day:

If you consider that there have been an average of 160,000 troops in
Iraq during the last 22 months and the firearm death rate has been
60 per 100,000. The rate in DC is 80.6 per 100,000. That means
that you are more likely to be shot and killed in our Nation's
Capitol, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the
nation, than you are in Iraq.

Conclusion: We should immediately pull out of Washington, D.C.

The rate in DC is 80.6 per 100,000.
I believe it is more like 50 per 100,000. 2002 it had dropped to 40 per 100,000. The figure of 80.6 per 100,000 is 4-9 years old.

Another reason for D.C. to get statehood. right now all American taxpayers are paying for D.C.'s plights and if they become a state, they will pay for themselves finally (and then we can withdraw our forces :) )

Can you say retrocession?

Give that hell hole back to Maryland; Virginia doesn't need it. And the U.S. Senate doesn't need two more socialists.

(I am sitting in D.C. as I type, being serenaded by the police and fire sirens - gotta love the District.)

The notion of pulling out of DC because of the death rate is just a fantastic example of how overly simplified reasoning can result in worthless conclusions. There is no comparison between DC and Iraq.

We own DC, not Iraq.
DC is the home of our leadership, not Iraq.
We have a long history in DC, not Iraq.
The majority of people in DC are Americans, not so in Iraq.

On top of that is the comparison of deaths. The original poster assumes that all the deaths in DC are Americans and that is not the case. Also, the poster only presents the threat to Americans in Iraq, not the total cost of life.

The notion of pulling out of DC is really a chicken, quitter sort of attitude.

Haven't spent much time in/around DC have you? Outside of the monument and tourist areas, it's a nasty cesspool. Every night, when there's a particularly horrible crime being announced on the news, you can be assured it's either in the District or in the MD counties right next to it (Prince Georges and Montgomery). There have been so many murders in or involving Ballou High School in DC that students are afraid to go back. I think there's been 5 murders in the past few months tied to that HIGH SCHOOL. I can't recall 5 deaths (murder, suicide, accident, natural, etc) in the entire time I was in public school (3, all from traffic accidents).

I have a book of mountain bike trails for NOVA/DC/MD. One of the trails goes through Anacostia (suburb of DC). Even the book warns in clear language not to be there at night and to be extra vigilant during the day.

Funny, just over the border in Va, things aren't as bad. Go to the MD/DC border and it's just as bad as the district itself. I wonder why...

I saw we build a 20ft wall around DC and let the locals live the way they seem to want to live.

"Give that hell hole back to Maryland; Virginia doesn't need it."

Virginia got its contribution to DC back.

In 1848.

That's why the western boundary of the District follows the Potomac River, and isn't the perfect, 10-mile on a side diamond that was called for under the act that created DC.

And I agree we don't need another state.

Try this on for size... US Senator Marion "I smoke crack and the goddamned bitch set me up" Barry.

Give that hell hole back to Maryland;

OOOooohhhh no. We don't want it either.

Double Naught,
I don't have the figures, but I will bet that 90% of them are American citizens, if not more.

Mtnbkr,
You forgot to mention Geogetown. The police are where the money is. Also, the crime is getting worse on the Va borders from what I hear. We have had very few gang related machette amputations in the past five years if any. How many in Va? I admit that the crime is worse on the Md side though.

20 cows,
Yes, Washington D.C. is a joke. ;)

Mike Irwin,
If D.C. became a state and eventually cleaned up their act, then people like you might move back and vote to repeal the stupid gun laws. If the population became more affluent, then the possibility of it becomming a fiscal republican state will be increased as well (IMHO).

Then again, all of the displaced criminal, scumbag gangbangers will move to Md.. I just changed my mind on wanting D.C. statehood. :( :D

But I seriously beleive that all Americans should have a vote in congress. For that reason I really support D.C. statehood and I hope it will change the city for the better if they do. (Besides, I plan to own stock in a company that makes flags. Just about everyone will have to buy new ones with 51 stars.)
