Im in the Air Force in Ne and am fixing to be moving back to Ga and was wondering what the process is for getting a concealed carry license or just a regular carry license is? Any help is appreciated

You need residency. It is possible you never gave up state residency.
You need a money order (no cash, cc, or checks, unless they changed it) for $24 to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations.
You need the rest as cash, I forget how much.
They will take your fingerprints.
Form is at your county courthouse.
Packing.org will have more specific detail.
Georgia is a shall issue state.
The great thing is that once you get your license, there is no waiting period for new gun purchases. They call in your background check and if they get an immediate answer that you are okay, you can take your purchase with you.

There is no waiting period for gun purchases in GA. Until recently, one didn't have to go through the instant background check, if one had a GA firearms license. However, that policy was rescinded due to a conflict between State and Federal authorities.

How long your getting your permit issued will take depends on your county of residence. Some counties are virtually instantaneous; others are in violation of the GA law by taking longer than the prescribed 60 days.

The code listings online at a couple of different places did formerly state that an active duty member of the Armed Forces of the US did not need to apply for the GA Firearms License and that their DD Form 2, ID Card, was sufficient to carry under the terms of this Chapter. The code has either changed or the online listings of the Code have been clarified because the pertinent section now states:
16-11-124.
This part shall not apply to:
(1) A peace officer of any duly authorized police agency of this state or of any political subdivision thereof, or a law enforcement officer of any department or agency of the United States who is regularly employed and paid by the United States, this state, or any such political subdivision, or an employee of the Department of Corrections of this state who is authorized in writing by the commissioner of corrections to transfer or possess such firearms while in the official performance of his duties;
(2) A member of the National Guard or of the armed forces of the United States to wit: the army, navy, marine corps, air force, or coast guard who, while serving therein, possesses such firearm in the line of duty;
(3) Any sawed-off shotgun, sawed-off rifle, machine gun, dangerous weapon, or silencer which has been modified or changed to the extent that it is inoperative. Examples of the requisite modification include weapons with their barrel or barrels filled with lead, hand grenades filled with sand, or other nonexplosive materials; and
(4) Possession of a sawed-off shotgun, sawed-off rifle, machine gun, dangerous weapon, or silencer by a person who is authorized to possess the same because he has registered the sawed-off shotgun, sawed-off rifle, machine gun, dangerous weapon, or silencer in accordance with the dictates of the National Firearms Act, 68A Stat. 725 (26 U.S.C. Sections 5841-5862).

About a year ago I went to my bookmark for this Chapter of the GA Code and was surprised to see that bolded (by me) part added. So, that would mean Security Police, maybe EOD, OSI, Combat Arms Instructors, etc. but not everyone. Shame.

Sensop: I don't believe that the code section you posted has anything to do with concealed carry, but rather with the POSSESSION of the weapons named in that section.

Well, gents, that was a cut'n'paste from the same code listing linked by atlctyslkr. Read it for yourself. BTW, section 16-11-126 describes how you may carry, not who may carry.

Rivers, you are correct; however I didn't really call it a concealed carry permit. If you read the entire chapter of the code, it never uses the term "concealed". However, you may only carry, concealed or otherwise, in accordance with sections 16-11-120 through 16-11-134 of the code. There is not another section in the GA code that discusses "concealed carry" of firearms. A search of the word "concealed" gets only 12 hits in the entire online listing of the GA code, none related to firearms.

I wasn't trying to play games with the language, but this is all we have in GA. Sections -120 through -134 constitute our right to carry. If I am foolish enough to carry in the open, especially in some wonderland like Hotlanta, I would truly deserve what ever gets dished out my way by Atlanta's finest. I choose concealed.

Sensop: Yep, I don't carry openly anywhere, except maybe a .22 pistol when I'm boating down a river or creek. I'm aware that GA doesn't call the license a "concealed carry" license; it's called a "Firearms License". I believe, however, that the section to which you refer specifically, regarding the ON DUTY carry by l.e., etc., is pertaining to machineguns, etc., that are specific to that l.e., etc.'s, duties.

One of my pet peeves about the GA law is that, while 18-20 year-olds can purchase (privately) and own handguns, they can't legally carry a loaded handgun in a motor vehicle. I find that absurd. I guess the right fix would be to lower the firearms license minimum age to 18.
