Concealed Carry Coats???

I was curious about the concealed carry coats I've been seeing in the NRA Store catalog and recently in the Sig Sauer product catalog.

Has anyone had any experience with these?
Do they support the weight of a full size firearm sufficiently?
Do they print easily?
How well does the built in holster hold?
Does carrying a heavier firearm in the pocket make that side of the coat sag more than the other?
Any other information you could provide me with?

I tried searching the forums, literally did so for hours (dial-up) and I couldn't find anything. If there is a specific thread for this, a direct link would be awesome.

I believe this would be a decent concealed carry option for me if it would support enough. Any info, reviews or experience with this topic would be great. Thank you!

Coronado Leather vs Sig

I have a leather Sig and a Coronado Leather ($$$) and consider the Sig to be a "cheap" knock-off of the Coronado. The Coronado carries the pistol further back under the arm pit just a smidgen forward of where a shoulder holster would ride and can conceal a small officer sized 1911 pretty well. Depending on your frame size you may be able to carry larger.

The Sig carries the pistol much further forward and has a tendency to print with anything much larger than a small Kahr. Build quality is not anywhere near as good as the pricey Coronado, the elastic band "holster" less secure, and spare magazine carry is a joke. I suspect that the softer and thiner cloth versions would have a tendency to print even more.

Both of the above are good looking leather jackets but the quality and concealbility of the Coronado Leather is head and shoulders better than the Sig but you pay for that quality. The good news is that the Coronado is a lifetime investment assuming your size doesn't change. Keep in mind that both are coats and cannot support a heavy weapon as well as a shoulder holster. A forty ounce pistol is gong to drag it down. These are best used with medium frame (Coronado) or small frame (Sig) single stack (or very thin double stack) short gripped alloy or polymer pistols.

My recommendation is that if you're going to use this method then you should probably bite the bullet and invest in the Coronado.

Well...

Thank you very much for the reply. That was very helpful. I was specifically interested in the leather carry coats. My current carry is a full size polymer auto weighing in with a full mag at about 40oz. I carry IWB, SOB and have no issues concealing. I am about average height and slightly above average in weight so concealment there is no problem for me. I have been interested in shoulder rigs and considering the winter months are here, that would be a viable option keeping in mind that my coat will almost always be on. I guess a shoulder rig would be a more secure method of carry than a concealed carry coat. Thank you for your reply and advice!

I have a canvas Sig coat that looks like a Carhartt. The coat itself is fine, the holster...not so much.

The only thing holding your gun is a piece of wide elastic. Getting *to* the gun for a draw is not very well thought out as you have to unzip first, then RIIIIIPPPP open the velcro and fish around for the gun grip.

No one figured out to stiffen the front panel either, so the gun prints more than it should. One side will stick out further, making things rather obvious.

I'll probably sell mine as I don't use it much.

Thanks

That was helpful. From the few replies and lack of threads on the subject, I think it's safe to assume that there are more secure and fitting methods of concealed carry. Thanks for the help guys.

What you could do with the Coronado is counter weight the jacket with a pair of reloads on the strong side. That won't work with the Sig because the the design is just FUBAR to begin with.

I saw one of these, a concealed carry jacket made by 5.11 Tactical, at the local gun store the other day.

Pretty neat design. The weapon is concealed in a large velcro-lined flap, to which you attach a holster. The key is distributing the weight of the firearm over the surface area of the entire velcro-lined flap. Don't know if it prints, but I would imagine the 2 layers of cotton canvas that it's made out of does well to hide any printing.

Here's a video that shows the pocket and some other accessories you can get. They're shown at the end of the video.

I remember seeing an article in a gun magazine about a product called a "Conceal-a-Cannon". It was a Bomber jacket with a holster that could carry full sized semi-autos. The picture showed a man about 5'8 and somewhere around 180 wearing the jacket standing beside himself with the jacket open in a way that revealed him carrying a full sized 1911. It has been a few years since I have seen the article, and can't find any mention of it on the internet. I'm starting to think my memory might be off.
