Conceal OWB Possible/easy?

Hey All,

I've been carrying concealed for about 6 months now using an IWB Yaki holster. It has been doing great so far and I like it for the most part. However, I recently got a new Springfield XDM 9 and it came with its own OWB holster. I tried it on for giggles and I LOVE it! So much more comfortable than my IWB. So I was wondering, Is there an effective way to carry concealed with an OWB holster besides wearing a trench coat? If so, then how easy is it?

Please keep in mind that I live in Florida so even in the dead of winter we barely touch freezing temps(if we're lucky) and the only time a coat is necessary is late November nights, December, January, and some of February. All other times are casual wear jeans short sleeve shirt and maybe an over-shirt if its not sweltering.

Also, as a side note, if you have any suggestions for an IWB holster/+ belt for the XDM 9 that you like I would appreciate it.

Thanks All:)

Shirts untucked. Actualy one of the best and apropiate garments for CC in the summer is a guayabera or guayabera style shirts. You live in Fla you should be familiar with them.

I carry in an OWB, both open and concealed. It's actually quite easy to CC with an OWB, even with my M&P40 full sized. An untucked shirt works quite well, and on cooler days a light hoodie does the job too.

I have had no luck carrying OWB. They always print for me and my IWBs don't. Maybe it has to do with body type/shape. I agree with wearing the guayabera. Great way to conceal - and if it has a pattern that helps conceal.

thats the only way I carry... perhaps you're wearing your shirts on the tight side... try going one size larger & you should be fine with a normal untucked shirt...

I live in Florida and wear Hawaiian shirts with my 20 round XDm 9mm year round.

It's not a problem, especially since we don't have to worry about "brief" exposure anymore. When it gets cool, I usually wear a light windbreaker.

The XD paddle holster is, IMHO, better than the Comp-Tac or Blade-Tech models.

I live an open carry legal state so it doesn't make any legal problem for some "peeking". Considering how so many folks dress, anyone with a button up shirt and socks is the minority and wearing a cover garment is a sure sign of something worth a second look to anyone who's paying attention. Fortunately, very few pay attention to their surroundings or the people around them.
Unless you draw attention to yourself by voice or action, hardly anyone takes notice of whether you have a cell phone on your belt or an UZI under your vest.
I have an IWB holster but find it less useable than the old school belt holster. My biggest problem is wearing through the seat covers on my vehicles.

I carry concealed OWB every day with a Glock 22. I think it just depends on your body type, and what gun you are carrying. It can be done.

As a South Florida resident, I carry nearly 365 days a year. Of course it makes it easier when the temps plummet down to the 60's and one has to wear a lightweight outer jacket. But for day to day carry, I just wear a shirt with long tails not tucked in. Fortunately, that happens to be the current day style. I could never get used to IWB carry. I carry a Kimber Stainless Pro Carry .45 ACP (4") in an OWB Galco holster which keeps my gun tucked in very close to my body. I also use a Galco Instructor belt which I have found to be one of the best gun belts I have ever owned.

I hear nothing but good things about http://www.thebeltman.net/index.htm
I am getting one from them myself sometime soon.

Do you have a wife or friend who you could "try" your OWB carry out on? See if they notice anything? It is going to depend a lot of your style of clothing, how it fits you and finally how much you stick out in a group of people. Also a factor is your height; I am 6'7 and I usually get lots of looks so if they ever do get CC in this damned state I am going to rule OWB carry right out.

Also,
Sorry I have to laugh at the guy from south Florida talking about Jackets in the 60's, I remember how easy it was to spot South Florida guys back when I lived in North Florida. If it was 50 out they would be the ones in the Parkas

^^Why not conceal a tank

Galco black leather fits my sig 250C (tight fit) and M&P full size, no issues. Fl allows for printing and short term peeking. Wear it to gun stores as they seem to enjoy calling people out when they can see that they're printing, like that's gonna get them to buy anything from you, but haven't had them say anything to me. No issues driving my truck or riding in a friends truck.

It can get cold here in N Fl, we had 30 days that were below freezing last winter. It ain't Buffalo, but most non residents wouldn't expect that kind of weather in Florida.

And people wonder why they print CCing lol..... I cannot see OWB for states with printing illegal. IWB is good. OWB holster is just so bulky and sticks out. Unless its winter and you have a coat. I don't know how people do it in summer months.

I might get flak for this but a high riding Kydex paddle holster with an untucked shirt is the way to go for OWB Concealed Carry. Keep in mind, I'm not talking retention - strictly OWB CC.

Sturdy gun belt with a quality OWB leather holster. I can CC my 1911 Gov. model, XD 9 & XD 45 in service models , M&P 40, 92 FS without issue.
Bottom line good belt quality holster CC is a none issue. As many have stated in the past once you decide to CC you will have to adjust your dress to accommodate CC.

I'm 5'10" and not exactly skinny, but when I want to CC OWB, I just wear a open button down shirt with my holster at roughly 2:30-3:00. Nice and easy and very quick on the draw when all you have to do is sweep the shirt back.

I don't know how people do it in summer months.

I do it every day with no problem,i don't see what the big deal is.My wife does it and even did it pregnant.

What i don't see is people who buy range guns but never carry them and then buy carry guns that never shoot them, because they aren't made to be range guns.

If a Ruger lcp isn't a range gun then i won't buy it.Practice with what you want and carry it.Don't skimp because you think you have to,find out then decide.

I'm 5'4" and 115 lbs and wear fairly 'fitting' clothes most of the time.

I work with people/customers all day, so I can't print while at work. It doesn't matter that my state is open-carry-friendly; I don't want to worry about losing an account because a customer noticed a pistol.

With that said, on weekends or evenings I sometimes carry my Glock 19 OWB in an Uncle Mike's paddle holster. I can't conceal that at all, so I just carry openly to some destinations. (After-hours at work is a regular thing for me, and I'm the only one there, so I generally go this rout once I'm back at the office each day.)

I can sort-of conceal my G19 in the cheapo Blackhawk Inside-the-Pants holster when I'm not at work. It gets me by and people don't really notice, as long as I wear a long enough shirt that covers most of my behind since the gun travels most of that length.

During the day, I carry an LCP in a tuckable job from The Holster Store. This really isn't ideal because it the holster's width ruins most of the savings with the LCP. I haven't picked up a different tuckable holster, but the width of this one really projects out my pants.

I position all my holsters about 4-5 o'clock.

I've been trying all of my button down shirts but all of them are just slightly too short. The front half inch or so of the barrel peaks below the edge of the shirt. The only way I've been able to alleviate this is by wearing my pants Urckle style. I haven't found the guayabera shirts in my area yet so no luck there. I'll figure something out because this is too damn comfy for give up on. Besides, The holster i have fits my 4506 too.....

What do you mean we dont have to worry about it anymore? I thought that measure failed.
