Conceal & Carry Class

Hiya,

Brand new here and fairly new to handguns. Just bought a Glock .40 a few days ago and haven't fired it yet. The last time I fired a handgun was probably 10 to 12 years ago and it was a Colt .45 I went to the range 2 times and didn't have a lot of problems hitting the target at 50 ft. Of course the grouping was awful as I'd never shot a gun in my life.

Ok, all that being said..... I am signed up for a conceal & carry class tomorrow and I guess I'm a bit nervous about it. The shooting part. I've extremley eye hand coordinated so I figure if I'm not flinching badly I will make it through. I've read and read until my eyes are sore about safety and I'm very confident about that part. I definitely know how to handle the gun and to respect it and to never take a chance. I'm sure many will tell me I should have taken a training course first and you might very well be right but too late..... I'm doing this tomorrow.

I believe on the written exam I have to score 70% or better which shouldn't be a problem since during the class they teach you these things.

Now on the shooting portion I guess they just judge your proficiency. I dunno about accuracy and how they do this. Guess I'm a little worried about it.

Anyone know what kind of questions I can expect to answer and how the shooting portion will go?

Thanks! :)

i dont know what you have to do to qualify, but in tennessee qualifying is stupid easy. 48 rounds split evenly between 3, 7, and 15 yards. get 36 of them anywhere on the black, and you pass. easy even when blindfolded. the range i shoot at said they only had one person fail ever, and she was a 90+ year old woman who they said had no business going near a gun. good luck.

Thanks!

All I know for sure is that I'll be firing 50 rounds. If it's distances like that I will definitely have no problems at all...... :D I appreciate the response!

Good Luck with it RT. I doubt you'll find it over-challenging. As to training, I don't believe you should necessarily do that first. But shooting does pretty much require a commitment to lifelong training. You can seek that out anytime.

Thanks Rich!

I'm glad to hear those answers...... :D I'll let you all know in around 9 or 10 hours from now..... Headed out shortly. ;)

Most CCW classes are open book. They cover everything during the class but are pretty reluctant to fail anyone. Often questions are answered by instructors during the test...... Take it serious, learn all you can and do take a follow-up course if you can.

The live fire portion is a bit more critical. By that I mean you need to show your proficiency in handling and firing. Safety is a foremost concern and I've failed people for that very reason regardless of test score. Target size and placement seems to vary by instructor.

CCW is a responsibility that can have huge ramifications if you’re unaware of your states laws. Learn them and be safe.

I have been thinking of taking the concealed carry class here. I know folks that took the class and the shooting part is pretty easy as long as you have shot the gun that you are using for the class before.

I am not interested in actually carrying "concealed". But, I am interested in avoiding any problems associated with carry in a vehicle that might technically be concealed. Any thoughts on the subject? (I don't mean to hijack the thread.)

Well, good news!

It was pretty much a test anyone could pass after hearing all the answers. 15 questions. The shooting part that I was worried about was actually a great surprise. Well, I kinda figured with my eye hand coordination I'd be alright but.... 50 rounds and I only had 3 out of the 10 area and those were in the 9. I shot better than any of the other 8 people in the class and had them asking me if I was sure I hadn't shot before.... lol I was actually surprised at how bad the others did as it seemed really easy for me. I did flinch now and then at others firing. We fired 30 rounds at will and slow and 20 speed rounds which weren't really speed I don't think. 10 seconds to fire 5 rounds seemed fairly easy to me. Now it's just up to givin' the sherrif 130.00 and waiting 'til they do my background (even though I already had this done to purchase the gun) check.... lol On the paper they gave us it said 4 weeks but the instructor told us 8 to 12... I figure he's right.... I wish I could start wearing now but I'm not going to jeapordize losing my license.

Thanks for the help guys....... :D

its not the being able to shoot the BG part that takes the most training, its knowing WHEN to shoot the BG. and having your firearm on you ALL the time so you have the luxury of having that option if your life is in danger.

congrats on your class. In Delaware, there isnt any test. read through the laws for a few hours, and shoot 100 rounds. Pay your money, get fingerprinted, fill out your application and get 5 non-family references to fill out a questionaire and wait.

Yep, exactly.... The instructor was good about telling us all about the evils and situations. I'm still taking a gun safety and training course next Saturday because I want to be sure about how to handle this thing and not take any stupid chances. And let's hope I never have to use the gun to defend myself or anyone else.

The test was a no brainer for sure..... lol I have to wonder why they do another background check on you if one was just done on me when I purchased the gun. Maybe the OSBI is more thorough or something or it was just written into law that way....

Thanks for the congrats! Going to try and find the best route to go now to be able to carry comfortably, securely, and still be able to draw if needed fast enough. Any suggestions?? :D
