complicated price question

My brother has a 686 (don't know if its 6" or 4" as of now, he is calling me back) that he is selling. Here is where it gets complicated. He probably got it for dirt cheap (he uses barter system), I will see him around Christmas time (lowered price as a result of being a gift?), and he also gave me the Sigma 380 you may have heard me mention. If condition is 98%+, what would you think would be fair?

Not Complicated At All

Greeting's MJRW,

In LNIB* condition, my topp offer would be $350.00.:)

*FootNote: Indicates less than 100 rounds fired!

The Smith & Wesson model 686 is a darn good gun,
there is no doubt about that. But, if the weapon is
in the hands of at least its second owner; it would
be very difficult to rate it in LNIB condition; cuz most
folk's would have to try it out, firing at least a box (50)
rounds each.

PS: If indeed in LNIB condition, this would be a sweet
deal; cuz often times NIB Smith & Wesson 686's run
over five C-notes.

Its kind'a like I once heard from a wise ole' man, "buy
as cheap as possible, and sell for all ya' can get"!

Well, now that may very well present a problem. You
see, Smith & Wesson's were made for various types
of governmental agency's, PD's, railroad's, etc. on a
special order basis. I read right here on this forum
that anybody can get a special production run with
an order of 200 units, or more! So, its quite possible
that he has happily encountered one of these limited
production model's. Give us a basic description, complete
with model designation and serail number; and I will try
to track in down for you.

Ala Dan, I truly appreciate that, but there's one thing I know about my brother. If he says only 2500 were made, it means he got the standard one that there billions of it made. I am confident its a model 66 at this point. In fact, the 2500 made thing only served to convince me further.

MJRW,

I just counted approximately 37 special production
run's of the Smith & Wesson model 66. As an example,
800 4" model 66's were made for the Indiana State Police
and shipped in the wooden presentation case's in 1975!
So, anything is possible. :D I would suggest that you
get your brother to bring it to the family Christmas Day
gathering, and to let you inspect it!:)

Lots of great commeratives and special editions for collectors, but as shooter they just kind of get in my way.

When looking for a gun my favorite response to: "Their were only 200 of these made" is to frown and say "Ohhh not very popular huh.. whats wrong with'em???" You should see some of the looks I get at gun shows with that line:D

Blue Duck357 - You've got that right. For instance, try selling one of those Indiana State Police guns in Virginia.

They claim "Only 2500 made."
I say "Yeah, 2500 made that month."
