Compliance rate with '89 Kalifonaia ban

Do any of you know off-hand what percentage of "assault weapons" covered by the 1989 ban in Kalifornia were actually registered? If I recall correctly (and hope) the estimated number was extremely low.

Also, how many people have been charged thus far for failure to do so?

I left Kalif., in the fall of 1997, and 'til then, no more than about 10% +/- of the assumed-to-be-in-the-State "assault guns", were registered. No one knows the percentage, for sure.

I know/knew quite a lot of people who owned the banned guns, who refused to register them.

I don't know the stats on prosecutions of those who refused to register and were then caught.

Current kalifornia doj estimates put it at 6,000 registrations out of 200,000 (I think it is MUCH higher) "assault weapon" owners in the state. I think the DOJ is trying to pad the numbers to get a higher than actual compliance rate, as they originally stated in 1989 there were 300,000 owners during the roberti-roos registration period.

Sometimes I get depressed thinking about what the future is likely to be. And then, other times, I think maybe there _is_ hope. If only 3% of "assault weapon" owners in Kalifornia are registering their guns (by the government's own undoubtedly-padded numbers), maybe things aren't quite so bleak.
