Can someone explain to me what this score would mean in a .22 rifle match:
539 (18x)
and how you go about calculating scores?
If I sound confused- its because I am

60 shots on a target with rings 1 - 10. This gives you the 539 (on average a 9). The 10 ring has an inner smaller ring, the x ring. It's used to break ties, depending on how many of the 10's were "perfect". The x ring usually means that the bullet hit the dead center of the target at least partially. So, in your example, the guy had 18 x shots (10's dead center).
But the x shots are only the tie breaker, 600 points no x beat 599 (59x).

When shooting at a numbered bullseye target, a shot scores the highest numbered ring that it touches. Example: if a bullet hole touches the 10 ring, then it counts as a 10 even though most of the bullet hole is in the 9 ring. A typical target may only have a few numbered scoring rings such as 10, 9, 8, and 7. Any shots that hit outside all numbered rings are misses and count as zero.

Interestingly enough, it is not uncommon at a prone rifle match involving elite shooters to have perfect 600/1200/1800/2400 scores shot by more than one shooter and the match will be decided on X-counts.
