Compensators! Huh?

Companies like MagnaPort and Taurus drill their holes so gasses escape vertically. How-some-ever, the Miculek compensator for rifles has the ports horizontal, and when Marlin was factory porting Guide guns, the ports were both horizontal and vertical. Same with the compensators on Springfield Armory M1As. The ports on the barrels of the Stoeger Double defense shotgun are all vertical.
So, for recoil reduction, which direction should the holes be pointing - up or out? Both ways? Or doesn't it matter?

Up is for muzzle flip and generally for handguns. Both ways is for recoil reduction and muzzle flip for handguns and very good for the 460 Rowland etc. . Out Is mainly on rifles for recoil reduction only and not for muzzle rise and used on rifles, especially the .50 caliber.

M1a's used to have an extra wide bottom slat to give some downthrust. I don't know if they still do.

As long as the gas is deflected anywhere other than forward you should notice some change. For example My Imbel "Combination Device" has 4 rows of 3 ports all angled at about 60 degrees from bore axis.

They can reduce recoil enough to keep a pistol slide from fully cycling too. Depends on the gun and compensator or ported barrel. A lighter recoil spring does the trick usually.

I actually have a Lonewolf ported barrel for My G22 in the mail as we speak. Can't wait to get it to the range and have some fun with it. :)

The horizontal holes in Marlin Guide Gun and Outfitter barrels, Winchester barrels, etc. are for pressure relief. If you don't bleed off a little pressure before hitting the 'vertical' ports, the ports erode fairly quickly and lose their effectiveness.

Proper recoil reduction requires a muzzle brake.

Compensators are for muzzle rise. ...totally different concepts.

When it comes to handguns porting and compensators are two different things.

Standard porting at best may give a 20 percent reduction in recoil, most compensators that have gas chambers and vertical ports that are attached to the barrel will give a recoil reduction of 50 percent.

Combine a good compensator with hybrid ports like the ports in a Schuemann Hybrid barrel and you will easily get a 70 percent reduction in recoil.

Horizontal ports that release the gas to the side help in controlling torque, combine these with vertical ports and you have a gun with less muzzle flip and less torque, this translates to the gun tracking straighter during the recoil impulse.

The 9x23 on my web site with the Caspian X comp and hybrid ported barrel had a recoil impulse like a slight backward push to the hand, the dot in the scope virtually stayed on target.

I had an AR 223 that I put a Smith compensator on, shooting the gun was like shooting a 22 rifle.

My .45-70 Contender handgun is what Magnaport Intl. calls rifle Magnaporting, that is both top and sides. It's still not enough, AFAIC.

Covered it pretty well. I have seen less with some compensators and tad more with some ported. But generally speaking those numbers about nail it.

You are far better going with a good compensators on the heavy hitter where a ported barrel is fine for your standard pistol calibers. I ordered a ported barrel for my G22 for more range fun and HD. A compensator is really over the top for a full size 40 IMO.

Velocity losses hasn't been touched on yet has it? I know it's not major loss but there is some.
