Comparison Request: Springfield Mil-Spec and Ruger P97

I know, I know...these pistols are on opposite ends of the spectrum. But see, I was headed toward the 1911 until I shot a Ruger 9mm today and was very impressed. And from what I understand, the P97 handles .45ACP even better than their 9s handle 9s.

So, what about shootability? Felt recoil? Fun factor? And so forth?

For what it's worth, I have had reliability problems with the two Springfields I have had. I have never had any reliability problems with any Ruger. Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with a Ruger. The P97 is a good gun and a good buy.

I've had a couple of P97's. Flawless operation. Maybe it's me but, they look rather ugly. Springfield's I've owned have had inconsistent accuracy. I like my Sistemas better. .....I even like my HS2000 better.

Shmackey, I am part of the chorus. Why? My Ruger P97 and P90 have both been flawless. They are both very accurate and bobble free. I am sure the P97 is one of the best buys on today's market. With this said, I prefer 1911A1 pistols. They just plain feel better in my hand. If I were on a tight budget I would go Ruger but if I wanted a pistol to tinker with and alter to my tastes I would go with the Springfield. Regards, Richard

Richard, how would you say the Rugers match up against a 1911 in terms of recoil and general shootability?

To all: sounds like you like your Rugers, which is understandable. I prefer the manual safety, size, and metal construction of the P90, but I like the idea that the P97 has seven more years of engineering built into it. Is the P97 that much better--so much that I'd forego the things I like on the P90?

I'm gonna vote for the Ruger's myself. Maybe if they charged $300 more, people would feel better. But as it stands, they are accurate, probably one of the most reliable pistols out there, and (In the case of the P97 and the P95) lightweight. Even my P94 isn't all that heavy!

What else can you ask for?

BTW- before anyone tells me they are ulgy, I think they look cool. I like the looks of Glocks too.

I can jump in and say go with the Springfield.

My first center fire pistol was a Ruger P91 .40. I have shot it a lot, in fact it was the main gun that I learned to shoot with.

My main carry gun now is a full size SA loaded model.

Don't get me wrong the P97 is an excellent pistol, that has addressed most of what I think the shortcomings of the 90 and 91 are. Mainly a better trigger pull. In fact the P97 is my wife's favorite pistol.

But I just find that the 1911 is much much easier to hit with, fast and accuratly. The 97 can be an accurate gun, but mastering a DA/SA trigger takes a lot more work.

You have asked about recoil, and I would have to say that the 1911 has less, but it also weighs more.

For reliability the P97 out of the box may have the edge. But I look at it this way. The 1911 is a very reliable design. They sometimes have a bad rep, because one part or another has some problem. All you have to do is isolate the problem, fix it, and then boom, reliable gun.

My gun has had a reliability package performed on it by the factory, it doesn't malfunction now. In the last couple of thousand rounds since there haven't been any problems. Just for fun I wanted to see how dirty it could get before it started to have malfunctions. I shot 800+ rounds of my lead reloads (loaded with good old dirty bullseye) before it got so gummed up that the slide didn't close all the way, once, on a single round. I cleared it and finished the match with no further problems. Cleaned it when I got home and no problems since.

Any mechanical object can malfunction. At the same match I saw a P95 choke repeatedly and these are normally some of the most reliable guns there are. There were also a couple of Glocks that jammed. If you shoot enough you will probably see just about everything jam at some time or another.

Now if $ is a major factor you are probably better off getting the Ruger. But even then, shoot both, a lot, and save up for the one you like best.

Just my opinion.

Recoil

First of all I am not very recoil sensitive. My guess is the P97 has less recoil than the 1911A1. Some say the polymer frame soaks up the recoil, I am not sure. I do not feel recoil from firing a 45acp is big factor. Regards, Richard

I have to agree that the recoil you get from a .45 is not in proportion with how much bigger the cartridge is than, say, a 9mm. Interesting.
