Comparison, please; Springfield V10 - Colt Defender

Gents and Ladies; I'd like some feedback. Considering between a new Colt Defender ($700 locally) and a used Springfield V-10 ($500). Never saw a V-10 till the other day, and it looked like a nice piece. The porting looked interesting, but wouldn't the gases coming from that nail me in a close-up self defense situation? What experience do you have with reliability comparisons, action, etc?

The V-10 comp works well, but as you said, it needs too be shot from arms lenght..$750 really sounds high for a Defender, they go around $600 here, nice pistols.....

I know that Mr. Novak refers to them as Colt "Offenders". This may, however, reflect unhappiness with Colt's choice of factory sights... ;)

Have shot my V-10 under all manner of lighting conditions and from all manner of firing positions. I find the "dangers of porting" to be largely over-hyped. Avoid unjacketed bullets in the V-10 for cleaning reasons as well as "ejecta", keep things that you value more than 12" away from the ports, and all should be swell.
