Compact, Hi-mag scope for use on a carbine....

Here's the thing, even though it's a carbine, I still hope to shoot at long range.
We have an apple tree about 250yds from our back deck. With a friends Colt M6700 and Leupold 6-24x, we send the apples a flyin'.
At the range we shoot at clay pigeons at 300yds. I have been told that the shorter barrel length won't decrease my accuracy that much, so I am trying to find a scope that is small enough for a carbine, and still has good magnification.

I am trying to keep the weight down, and don't want to put to big a scope on it, but I think I will need some serious magnification.

Any thoughts?

What caliber carbine?

If you don't plan on shooting over 300 yards, I think something along the lines of the Tasco 1.5-4.5x32mm should work fine for you. That's what I have mounted on my .45-70 brush gun...

Barrel length doesn't affect accuracy. With iron sights, a longer barrel gives a longer sight radius, making accurate aiming easier.

A short barrel will give lower velocities than will a long (24", 26") barrel. Lower velocities mean a higher trajectory for a given distance.

For all around use, and mainly hunting, 3X or 4X is all you'll use, for the larger field of view. For regular shooting at 250 or 300 yards, a bit more magnification helps. 6X or 9X is about all you'd need. (I'm happy with a 3X9; I "play" at 9X on my 500-yard range with no problems at all.)

Thanks for the help. The carbine in question is a Colt Gov. carbine lower w/ a Colt M4 upper. 4x just won't do it. I am shooting w/ guys using 20" AR flat-tops and 24x scopes at 300yds.

I know I can't put that big a scope on my M4gery, but I am pretty sure sure I'll have a hell of a time hitting a 3" clay pigeon w/ less than 12x. Maybe 9x will work, so I'll check out the Leupold.

I was wondering if anyone makes a really hi-mag compact. Has anyone seen one smaller than the Leupold compacts?

Check out www.premierrecticles.com Dick Thomas does some pretty neat stuff with Leupold scopes. I'm not possitive the address is exactly right. I'm new here, how do I post without a quote? Nice place you folks have here, been just reading for the last week, easy to get around and some good folks. Some great advice on this board and I'll be telling my friends about ya. beertrucker-x
