I'm considering purchasing a compact .40S&W single stack pistol in stainless for use as a CCW. What's the best out there?

I'd recommend the Glock 23 or 27... but they aren't stainless. A standard Kahr 40 might do the trick if you can sufice for HALF the number of rounds as the Glock. Also look at the Sig 229.

Only single stack .40s I'm aware of are the Kahr, the AMT Backup, and 1911 clones (the SA Compact, the Kimber Ultra Carry and Compact, and the AMT Skipper). Of these, the Ultra Carry or Kahr would be my choice. Lighter and more reliable than the rest. Personally, I'd go with the Kahr. It's got a relatively light DAO trigger, has essentially no protrusions, and is overall very nice.

The Kahr K40 is great, but it's a brick! 25oz. Also, you may wanna look at the Kahr MK40. It's the smallest .40 I know of, but it's a pinkie swinger. Please don't beat me for mentioning it, but the S&W (spitooey) New Chief's Special .40 looks nice, but I have no first hand with it as I do the Kahrs.

Kahr makes an AWESOME little pistol called the P9. It's a polymer 9, 7+1, at 17oz. Kahr continues to swear that they won't be making a .40 in polymer, but I keep begging anyway. www.kahr.com

One more thing... I had an AMT45 once... ONCE!

I forgot to mention the S&W 4013.

While I'm a fan of double stack pistols (as well as the 99 cent double stack from Wendy's), the guns that fit your bill are the Sig 239, a couple S&W's, the Kahr, a few Colt clones, and I think that's it.

The reason your selection isn't that great is that the .40 was envisioned as the round to have the power of the .45 and the capacity of the 9mm. Thus, makers wanted to double stack to get that high capacity.

I would suggest a Star Firestar 40s&w, if you can find one. They carry 6+1 in a single stack mag. I don't know if Interarms is still importing them, however. I have one and it is a nice piece.

Followup... The Star is blue instead of stainless. However, they made one with a hard finish they call Starvel, which appears to be a very hard chrome that is satin finished.

The Tenefer finish should help protect it from salt + 11 rounds total. Relatively heavy (25 oz) but it is too pretty to sit in the safe.
