Compact 40

Hi-Im new to this forum and hope this isn't a repeditive thread. I am looking for a compact .40 S&W. I have considered both the Smith&Wesson Chiefs Special and the Beretta 9000s. Does anyone have any recommendations? Is there another gun I should be looking at? Thanks for your help.

While I am a fan of Beretta in general, I think they dropped the ball with the 9000s. The slide has little external surface area, making it hard to grip, a factor if you ever have to clear a jam. This will also make it difficult to load. The decocker/safety is very stiff, making it difficult to use. These faults may seem minor, but try one out. Love all the other Berettas though.
Take a look at the Kahr K40 and MK40. They have a smooth trigger pull. You can even get smooth wood grips. That way the rubber grips won't snag your clothing.

The Kahr MK40 is about the smallest there is. No manual safety to fool with either. I`m not a Glock buff but there`s a couple of small ones that you may like.

I think croyance hit the nail on the head in regards to the 9000s. I really like Berettas as well, but I couldn't live with the 9000s. As croyance said, there is very little purchase on the slide. Clearing malfunctions under stress would not be fun.

In all fairness, I haven't fired one (just handled several in shops) and I have heard from owners who love them.

I'd take a look at the H&K USP compact, GLOCKs, and Kahrs.

By the way, welcome to the TFL. . .its a good place to learn.

You cant get any better than the HK USP40c for accuracy and reliability, however, shoot several weapons and choose the one that fits you the best.

I couldn't shoot my USP40c worth beans at first, but after 500-750 rounds, I have a hard time missing a pop can at 25 yards; and with a rest, I can regularly hit cans at 50 yards. I have never been able to do that with any pistol before.

Regards, Shoney

The only problem with the HK USP Compact is that for a compact it's rather large.

I'm saving my pennies for a Kahr MK40, but honestly my Steyr M40 is very comfortable concealed (about the same size as a Glock 23) Its larger then my Makarov, but I still prefer to carry it over the Mak just because its so comfy ... not a hard corner anywhere.

I wish the Taurus Millennium pistols could be trusted :(

USPc .40 : If price is no problem, then the is one of the best.

Also the Sig 239, single stack and compact for concealment.

Sig 229: thicker both in slide and grip, but still compact.

Glock 23 or 27: the G-23 is roughly the same size as the USPc, and the G-27 is shorter both in grip length and slide/barrel length.

Walther p-99: James Bond's favorite ;)

Kahr K-40: very comfortable grip and slimmer than most others. Single stack design, and heavy being of all steel.

Any of these will serve you well, and should be in your consideration/ next to buy list. :D

Another satisfied Kahr MK40 owner, here. They are the smallest, but not the lightest, which is one of the reason many will argue that they're the best.

Dont like somethink quite that small? Take a look at the Kahr K40.

The HK uspc really isnt a compact, only compared to the fullsized HK. The Beretta is a good gun and is fairly small. The Chiefs Special is OK....I have a 3953 and love it, as far as a "small gun" the chief really isnt. You are better off with a "compact" like a 4053 etc. For a real compact .40 you have the Kahr K40/MK40..
you wont find better guns and they are as compact as you will find...nothing is better quality. Not even the HK....let the flaming begin.

Shoot well

I carry a .40 Sig 239, to me, best choice. I had a S&W CS in 9mm and hated the saftey setup. CDNN is selling stainless .40 CS for $349 if thats your choice.
