Commander for 1500.00

I would like to have at least one "nice" 1911 in my collection and to me that would top-end at the 1500.00 mark. Even the idea of spending over a grand gives me pause but I know that quality costs. I already have a SA mil spec that I bought a long time ago on Gun Broker so I know I enjoy the platform, and I have been interested in the compact/commander size of the 1911.

Will 1500 get me at least in the used bracket of a DW V Bob? Also the commander classic looks nice too, or up for other commander models just as long as the frame is also steel as it will be for range work primarily.

One last question, what did the V bobs run pre pandemic/pre-Biden, just out of curiosity.

The black duty coat looks like it would be freaking excellent on the VBob. Catches my attention, although I'm not entirely opposed to the stainless either as none of my collection have a straight stainless finish.

Even the aluminum frame Dan Wesson’s are meant for high round count. They all have ramped barrels as far as I know.

Dan Wesson makes a few models new under $1500 and I’m sure many used. I wouldn’t sell either of mine for $1500….they are that nice!

I have the Vigil CCO 9MM and Custom Specialist 45.

I personally want a Lightweight Commander in .38 Super with a flat mainspring housing.

If I could find one of those for a price that didn't destroy my bank account I'd give serious thought to finally carrying a 1911-style cocked and locked for CCW.

Dan Wesson Guardian, checks most of the boxes
- Alloy Frame
- Commander size
- Available in .38 Super

The manufacturer's suggested retail price of $999 will get you a Colt Combat Commander. It is all steel, has a proper feed ramp for a .45, and will likely run right out of the box. Plus it has the panache of the rampant pony and the name Colt on the side.

You should not have to to pay the full MSRP.

Yeah, that's bank account destruction territory... :)

That is a damned nice looking piece of kit, though.

Colt does have a classiic in .38 Super with a flat mainspring housing -- blued -- for $850, which isn't bad at all. I could be tempted.

Hum... I could be REALLY tempted...

You and I both are looking at the same ones, Mike. I love Dan Wessons and I like Colts. And, I want a .38Super in my stable.

If I didn't just buy 2 firearms and dump a few thousand in parts for my VW project, I would be snagging one of those up in a heartbeat.

I know nothing about Dan Wessons and not much more about Colts.

I have been eyeing a Rock Island full size in .38 Super over at Bud's. It's about half the price of the Colt, but I know even less about the Rock Islands.

Rock Island's are a very good quality 1911 at the lower end of the price spectrum. I have had a GI model for over twelve years and it still shoots as good as new.

I only buy 1911's in .45 auto so I don't have any idea of how the RI pistols are in that caliber, but if I was looking for a reasonably priced .38 super 1911, I would be inclined to the them a try.

My advice is to buy a high condition pre 80 series Colt. It will probably cost you over $1k but will retain its value. I never get involved in a gun purchase that I can’t walk out of even. A Colt pre 80 well taken care of will increase in value.
