Comedy Is Not Pretty

From the web site of the Comedy Central cable network:

"Every day in this country, more than fifteen children are killed by firearms. In 1994, gun deaths were the third leading cause of death for children ages 5-14. If current trends continue, firearms will be the leading cause of injury-related death to children by the year 2003. Cease Fire is dedicated to reducing the number of handgun-related deaths and injuries in this country. By highlighting the public health implications of handgun violence, Cease Fire is working to educate Americans to view handguns as the inherently unsafe products they are, and as not appropriate to have in any home. Just as Americans now think twice about the health effects of smoking cigarettes, or of not using seat belts when riding in a car, they need to understand the severe health implications of bringing a handgun into the home - particularly in homes where there are children."

There is a link to ceasefire.org but their web site is not up.

Comedy central's website shows a default address for e-mail comments as "mail@comedycentral.com". I'm sure they'd love to hear from you about how much you're going to watch and how much you're going to spend on their advertiser's products.

Just emailed comedy central.

Basically told them that the stats they use are about as real as the audience their shows draw. They should spend more time working on shows and less time trying to talk about subjects they obviously know nothing about.

Here's what I sent them:

To the Management of the Comedy Central network:

On the Comedy Central web site is a page called "Central Issues". On that page is the following paragraph, referring to Comedy Central's support for an organization called Cease Fire:

<Insert silly crap from their web site>

I will not bother to argue statistics with you, since you can prove anything you like with statistics. I will not belabor the point that just about every household in this country had guns in it until just recently. I will not try to imagine how anyone plans to keep banned guns off the street with the same admirable law enforcement methoids that have made America free of illegal drugs.

I will simply say that, as long as you support people who are trying to deny me a Constitutionally protected right, I will not watch your network. Instead, I will spend the half-hour I used to devote to "Win Ben Stein's Money" publicizing this situation to all legal and law-abiding firearm owners so that all 40 million of us may boycott your programming. I will also inquire of Time Warner Cablevision whether I can have your programming removed from my cable service.

Sincerely,

David Scott
