Combat Boots

I like the look of the newer style Tan combat boots. I'd like a pair that are of good to excellent quality, durable, and are o.k. for hot weather.

And recommendations on model/type and place to purchase them would be appreciated.
 
a short word

while i am relatively new to this forum, and still pretty much a newbie about fire arms, one thing i do know very well is combat boots as i wear them every day. I have been in the army for five years. You will not find a pair of tan combat boots that are as comfortable on the feet and cool (temperature wise) as an older pair of black jungle boots. Tan ones are not that durable, will show wear very quickly, and i dont know why, but are just plain hotter. thats just my .02
 
+1 for black jungle boots. I wore my steel toes for 3 years before my mum threw them away. They also have great arch support.
 
Yes, stick with good ol' fashioned black jungles.

Brands that I know are awesome are Altama, Belleville, and Wellco. I don't know if Belleville makes Black jungles anymore, same with Wellco. Altama is the best so far for me and yes I have tried all three boots.

Reason the tan boots don't last long is because they are reverse leather. The rough side is on the outside, is more porous and soaks in a lot of water and moisture. This leads to mold and mildew and eventual rotting. I have seen desert boots have mold grow on them and I can only imagine how they will rot soon after. (They work great in the desert, hence desert boot. Anywhere else and you have a problem.)

Make sure you do your research before hand and be sure to try on all the boots before purchasing, whether it be Desert or Jungle. Coming from experience of several here, the Black Jungles are the way to go. And I will be bias here and say Altama is the best brand yet.

There are deserts and jungles mixed in there.

(Oh and golfnutrlv, I have also tried the 5.11 boots. For someone who doesn't want to do a lot of walking or running these work perfect. These ARE NOT good operating boots as there is too much padding and not enough support. The Shock Mitigation System is a nice thing in theory but it's not executed well because they have put comfort over efficiency. Boots I have tried are the 8" Side-Zip A.T.A.C, XPRT Tactical, and the Tactical HRT boot. Give them a shot, you may like them.)

Frankly, unless you really need combat boots, I would go to REI and buy some of the store brand hiking boots there. I have found them a lot more satisfactory than any of the combat boots I wore.

If I had to go that way though, jungle boots are nice. In the local climate, you can even throw on some Smart Wool socks and wear them year round.
 
cant tell you a specific brand, but if you can find a surplus store around you some where you can find a pair of old black jungles for about 25 dollars that are still in really good condition.
 
On the high end, the oakley-made boots are probably the most comfortable boots Ive ever worn, even compared to my old jungle boots. That said, they are also the most expensive pair of boots ive ever worn bar none (fortunately mine where issued to me. Wheeew!).

Next, I would vote jungle boots, though they are harder to come by now that both the army and air force have switched to their new uniforms (the air force even going so far as to issue sage green boots).

Following that, any of the bates line of boots are all pretty solid boots (i prefer the marauder style with the cloth sides, but those arent greeat for scrambling around rocks or bushes). Break in fairly quickly, but unfortunately wear out a bit quicker as well.

Quantico Boot

Several brands mentioned above are available at Quantico Boot at fairly reasonable prices. For summer, I like the Bates over Bellevilles or Danners because of weight but I still own all three brands. Have yet to try the Altamas.
 
I got out of the Army in '94 and I still have and wear my black jungle boots. I don't wear them often, but I wear them hunting and I wear them when I go out to the country to go shooting. So I probably wear them about 20 days a year. Not bad for a pair of 17 year old boots. So I guess I'd recommend those :)
