im think of geting into the revolver game and im looking at either the Comanche III or the Rossi R97104 in 4" barrel. iv never shot a revolver before but im not new to big bore recoil, in that i own a 45ACP. im looking for opinions on either.

Some friends and I bought Commanches a couple of years ago. The issues we have all experienced are minor and easily remedied. The trigger springs aren't always able to reset. We pulled them, stretched them and reinstalled them. We don't count them as target revolvers. They shoot and they are cheap. If you don't feel comfortable tinkering, have a gunsmith rework or replace the trigger spring. Good deal for the money and far better than Rossi. We all bought several Commanches in 22, 38 Special, 357 Magnum and one was a 44 Magnum. There were slight complications with the trigger springs, ejection problems with the 22s and the 22s only liked high velocity ammunition. A few pins backed out on their own with the 357 Magnums and the 44 Magnum. The 38 Specials have been dependable and the only issue is a split grip. The 44 Magnum also lost its rear sight, screw fell out in the grass. Factory sent a new sight and screws. The fit and finish is not excellent. If I had little to almost no disposable income, I would buy Commanches. They certainly bear a strong resemblance to the old Llama line of revolvers. RSA is what ours say for manufacturer. There was a Rexio-South America. I believe they are the manufacturer. The quality control has gone way up if they are the manufacturer. I invested less than $600.00 in 4 revolvers.

I don't know much about the Commanche, but Llama is involved there somewhere. Not sure if it's the manufacturer or importer.

Anyway, I have this old Llama revolver. It's been very dependable and I carry it often. Surprisingly accurate, too. Fit and finish is a little bit sloppy compared to a Smith or whatever, but for the money it's a good gun.

How much difference in price are we talking between the two?

Just for you to know, the .45acp recoil sits near the bottom of the big bore recoil scale. It will in no way compare to the recoil of the .357 magnum.

omegapd,

the Comanche will run about $200 and the rossi will run about $250.

sounds like Comanche makes a decent revolver.

Majic,

im sure i can handle it, im 250 lbs and 6' 2".

Hey Clone,

At the top of this forum is a good guide to buying a revolver. Read through that and check some of the things listed in it.

Depending on how much you'll shoot it, either would probably work. Both do have a lifetime warranty, also, just incase you need it.

Can't speak for the current crop (just resurrected this past year), but I owned a stainless Rossi 971 4" several years ago and it was excellent. (Only way you can get the 971 in stainless now is 6"--like Taurus is trying to "force" you to their (branded) 4" SS) The Rossi seemed to fit somewhere in between a J and K frame though I think the specs would say it's pretty close to a K. Whatever it is, it with its Hogue-style grips was "just right" to my smallish hands. Good reliable true 6 shooter. The current blue'd ones aren't all that fancy but I'd think, now with Taurus' lifetime warranty backing, it'd be a pretty good value.

it will most likely be use for my weekly range practice useing 38sp ammo. im looking to keep the price at $200 or i would without question get a ruger or S&W. does anyone know if rossi or Llama still cover secondhand (used) guns under there warrenty?

thx guys, i really appreciate the response's iv goten here. keep'em comin i never buy a firearm without doing my research. :)

I just mentioned good experience with a Rossi 971, but can't argue against 308LAW's comment either as a decent way to go. BUT, if wanting a NEW gun in the under $300 range - with a lifetime warranty -- the Rossi's probably a pretty safe way to go.

For about the same price you can get a used ruger or if you find a super deal a Smith. Rossis and Comanches are servicable but for the same money I'd prefer a used revolver with superior fit and finish. I got a S&W Model 28-2 for $250 and couldn't be happier.
