Columbine Civil Suits

I just read in the Denver Post that the girlfriend-straw is being sued. Why are there not federal charges being issued? I thought it was a federal crime to straw purchase for a minor when not legal guardian or parent? If there is no statute, should there be?

It's a federal crime to buy a gun from a federally licensed dealer and give it to a minor. Anderson bought the two shotguns and one rifle from a private seller then gave them to the two "boys". Under Colorado State law, the controlling law in this case, that was not a crime in 1999. On the other hand, Maynes, who sold them a pistol in a seperate private sale, did violate state law restricting minors from buying handguns and was sent to jail for 6 years. The Colorado legislature passed a law in the 2000 session, which the Governor will sign if he hasn't already, which makes all of the above illegal.

Anderson was lucky she avoided prison. Now, she'll pay big in civil court. Very, very, few people like her in Colorado. A jury will crucify her.

I agree, but there- also in the "POST"- is an article regarding a Pawn Shop in Aurora where the owners were arrested due to straw purchases. Suppossedly 170 SNSpecials were sold. Why would the feds wait so long to arrest the owners?

The article I read in the Pest this morning implied that the charges were handed down by the Grand Jury. That implies a certain amount of protocol that had to be followed which probably took time.

On the subject of the Pawn Shop, I think I'd wait until the facts come out. This smells of politics.
