I've been asked to find out the specifics concerning a revolver. I've a general idea of what it may be, but I need help nailing the exact model and, possibly, a value of the piece:

Colt's Pt. F.a. co. HARTFORD CT . U. S. A.
PAT'D AUG. 5. 1884 JUNE 5 1900 JULY 4 1905
POLICE POSITIVE 38 SPECIAL
Above the handgrip, on the left side from the shooter's perspective, is the rearing horse Colt logo. The serial number is 263622

Its a police positive, in .38 special. I'm no Colt expert, but unless it's some sort of ultra rare super early production gun, it would sell around here for $300 (assuming it was in good mechanical condition).

in this part of the country, in that kind of shape... Probably $175-$200 tops. The one in the picture looks very ruff.. looks like the blue is 100% gone. It also looks as if it was completely rusted over and someone went at it with a wire wheel to clean it up. The screws are jacked up pretty bad, it has probably been opened up and monkeyed with. I've seen those in very good shape, much better then what you are showing, go for $400 in my area.

But, I'm not a collector or anything... I don't know if that is some ultra rare model or serial number or something. I wouldn't bet on it though.

Howdy

Let's be correct. It is a Police Positive Special. It should say so right on the barrel near where the caliber is called out, unless it is worn off. The Police Positive Special had a longer cylinder and slightly longer frame for the 38 Special cartridge. The generic Police Positive had a shorter cylinder and frame and was usually chambered for the 38 S&W cartridge. The Rampant Colt is a trade mark of the Colt company. They are very nice revolvers, I have a couple of them.

If you post the Serial Number, a date can probably be guessed at.

By the way, those old hard rubber grips make it a bit more valuable, depending on how much wear is on them.

I was going to say that but DJ beat me to it.

Very common to hear the Police Positive Special called a Police Positive. Most shooters are unaware that they are two different models.

I would guess $250-$300 tops on value due to the finish wear and I wouldn't personally pay or offer that. Just because it's a Colt does not mean it is extremely valuable. But I guess "value" all depends on what you have in the gun and what your expectations are.
