I heard of someone who says his grandfather brought a Colt1911 home from WW1. The serial numbers had been filed off. Would this be illegal to own? What would onedo with such a pistol?

I'll post a more rational answer. :)

Yes, it's illegal. Here's the applicable section from the 2000 FFL regulations 922.(k) You may not ever run across anyone who'll call you on it, but that wasn't the question, right? :D

"It shall be unlawful for any person knowingly to transport, ship, or receive,
in interstate or foreign commerce, any firearm which has had the importer's or
manufacturer's serial number removed, obliterated, or altered or to possess or
receive any firearm which has had the importer's or manufacturer's serial number
removed, obliterated, or altered and has, at any time, been shipped or transported in
interstate or foreign commerce."

Assuming it's from 1918 or so, would it have been illegal to remove the serial # prior to the 1934 NFA or even the 1968 GCA?

Still, a gun with a filed-off serial # sounds like it has a history -- and not one I would want to be associated with.
