Colt xm901 prototype

I figured it was something like that, but their implementation sure is slick. The downside is the revised location of the pivot pin; that pretty well locks you into just the Colt uppers specifically designed for that platform.

I wonder how much the thing will cost- if it costs as much as BOTH a .308 and a quality 5.56 AR, well, there's not much point. May as well just buy two guns instead of one. But it's a neat way of going about it.

Colt is entering a market already full of choices. Supposedly this well except any mil-spec 5.56 upper. You need the mag well adapter and you need to change out the recoil system (buffer and spring) when changing from 7.62 to 5.56. It's sure to appeal to the Colt fans.

A dealer friend is on the list for one, so I'll get to shoot one someday soon.

I handled it at SHOT show this year with both 7.62 and 5.56 uppers. I think it's a cool design, but ultimately not for me. I already own a 308 AR, and would be happier with a seperate 5.56 rifle. The bulkier, heavier lower(vs an AR15) feels clunky and cumbersome with a 5.56 upper installed. At the expected price you could get into two rifles, and having to change out the buffer and spring along with the upper and magwell block means the 901 is not really a quick change operation. I don't see much advantage. At $1400-ish it might appeal more.
