Colt Woodsman questions

Hello.

My ex-father-in-law gifted to my son a Colt Woodsman. The slide does not lock to the rear with either magazine inserted. I have not fired it yet. My son said that FIL hinted that it might need some work. So, who works on the Colt Woodsman?

The serial number is TM08102. Can you guesstimate a production year?
 
That SN comes up at Colt.com as a 1996 "Target .22" previously known as the Cadet.
If you have real Woodsman magazines, that might be the problem.
 
After closer inspection, it is not a Woodsman; it is a Target Model. My son and I put about 100 rounds through it this morning and experienced a variety of failures.

It may just need a deep clean. My ex-FIL has a ton of guns but nary a cleaning product.

I will reach out to the Colt forum to look for a smith to give it a good cleaning and inspection.

How do I know? The only marking is "COLT CAL 22 L.R." on the baseplate. The magazines I have look like internet images for both the Woodsman and the Target Model.
 
Long debate on the minutae of Gifted vs Gave on THR.

Any road, the Colt Target magazines I have seen were stainless, the Woodsman magazines are blue.
 
The MW online dictionary just uses "gifted" in the sense of having a special talent or ability or a high IQ, but not as the practice of giving a gift. Gifted or giftedness in that dictionary sense originated in 1869, so it's not an old term. But using gifted to mean giving something to someone is much older, even though it seems chiefly to be a Scottish usage. This article on the subject says:

“The History of the Church and State of Scotland,” written in the 1600s, includes the line “The recovery of a parcel of ground which the Queen had gifted to Mary Levinston.”

So it's legit, at least in Scottish English, and at least in archaic terms.


Regardting the Target Model, if you know someone who has a higher power ultrasonic cleaner with gun cleaning solvent supplies and water displacing oil for the post-rinse, that might be a good way to eliminate old fouling.
