Colt Troopers

I recently purchased a very nice Colt Trooper with a 4" barrel, serial # 788XX. I am curious of its series, year of manufacture and frame size. If someone out there would give me this information, it would save me the cost of having to get a book on Colt pistols, which I probably ought to have but I do not.
I hope that I am able to get some fatter grips and possibly a white outline blade for the rear sight. It is the only pistol I own with a 4" barrel and I think that it might make a good in house personal defence wepon.
Thanks for the help.

Stephen b., your Colt Trooper was made in 1968. The Trooper would have the similar frame size as the .357 Magnum Model, or the Metropolitan, Lawman, Official Police and the Officers Model Match from the Mk III series of revolvers. Hope this helps!

Is your Trooper marked "Trooper" or "Trooper Mark III"

If it's a Trooper, it is a Colt "I" frame revolver. This is a medium frame gun. Others in this series were the Official Police, .357, Officer's Model Match, and the Python.

If it's marked Trooper Mark III, it's a post 1969 "J" frame gun.
Others in this series were the Lawman MK III, Metropolitian Police, Official Police MK III, Trooper MK V, and the King Cobra.

Both series guns use the same rear sight, and Gun Parts Corporation and Brownell's carry replacement rear sight blades in white outline.

Original factory grips for both are availabe from Gun Parts, and often show up on Ebay. Trooper MK V and King Cobra grips will not fit the Mark III guns.
Hogue makes very good combat grips for both types, that are superior to the factory designs.

stephen b,

You've gotten some great info so far. Another thing to check to determine frame size is the mainspring. If it's a "V" spring you've got a keeper, an original Trooper (pre 1970). That makes it an "I" frame. Same frame and internals as a Python.

If the mainspring is a coil spring, you've got an MK II or III. That would make it a "J" frame.

Either way, it should serve well as a house gun.

Good Luck...

Joe
